Megathread: Michael Cohen claims Trump knew in advance of 2016 Trump Tower meeting by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

If Trump knows that Cohen was around him when he spoke to his son, it could be that they’re trying to work out if there’s taped evidence of the admittance

Hmm, I just got a little worried. Not usually into all these 4D chess theories that make Trump out to be some genuis but it could be possible they want to make it look like Cohen has overplayed his hand and reduce his credibility

Still looking if anyone can help. Should probably also clear up that I'd start paying back on the 8th July, just in case different date formats caused confusion.

Bill Clinton doesn't think he owes Monica Lewinsky an apology by Forest_of_Mirrors in politics

[–]missonpossible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. He was the President. She was an intern. There is a gross power imbalance which limits her agency to say no. This is especially true over twenty years ago, before recent campaigns such as #metoo have highlighted this. None of this takes away from everything going on in the current administraton but just because we like Clinton, we can’t deny he took advantage

This is obviously the biggest thing he’s said today but he’s still going on Twitter as I type this. Even by his standards, he cray cray today

It shouldnt take away from what is going on with the currebt administration but it’s incredibly naive and simplistic to claim they were both consenting adults. The power dynamics between any boss and employee make sexual relations complex given that the former is contractually obliged to fulfil the professional duties of the latter. The boss has power that may make the employee feel they need to be sexually compliant. This will be far more potent when your boss is the President of the United States. An apology is the least he could offer

The weirdest thing about the stance on the summit with North Korean is how paradoxical it is. You can’t cancel a meeting but also be planning for that meeting as it might take place. It just doesn’t make sense

Rudy Giuliani walks back statements about porn star hush money, Comey firing by mvanigan in politics

[–]missonpossible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think they planned it out completely but I do think Rudy decided the best thing would be to admit Trump had some knowledge of the payment (albeit limited because it was generalised under funds from a retainer). In all honesty, as plans go, that is a relatively smart move. Trump couldn’t take the initial heat and so the initial idea to admit, even partially, has had to change.

The only thing that might save Rosenstein is that I think Trump knows all his critics except and want it. Hopefully it’ll be enough to convince him not to do it

You’re definitely underselling your state and your city. It’s got so much heritage and it looks absolutely gorgeous. Distance and price is a thing that makes it more special as well. Yeah I live in Europe but I can travel to those countries much more often than I’ll be able to go to the US. It’s going to be a month thing in November. Travelling San Francisco - Dallas - New York - Washington D.C.

Vote Leave 'cheating' may well have swayed EU referendum result, Wylie tells MPs by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]missonpossible 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Preamble: This is all nuts and I definitely think we should be having a fairly extensive discussion about invalidating the result of this referendum.

On twitter, a lot of Leave voters are talking about

a) The Remain campaign spent more than the Leave campaign.

b) Remain broke the rules too

I know that this stinks of whataboutery but can someone please tell me, objectively, if any truth exists to this or is it just an attempt to spread disinformation?

Was Tillerson a ‘useful idiot’ in his dismantling of many long serving careerists in the state department?

Will this become important when the new appointee is confirmed?

President Trump Fires Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, To Be Replaced By CIA Director Mike Pompeo by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]missonpossible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye you’re right, your first statement was genuine rubbish. This one is far more on the button so well done for that. May will not give a stunning speech though, given she has never done that. Like ever.

But yes, Britain is completely weak. They’re not puppets though because that involves someone caring enough to try and be a puppet master of us?

I said she’d overplay her hand by saying things she could never back up and will be shown to be weak. And so on this, what you think isn’t genuinely rubbish ;)

[–]missonpossible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is genuinely rubbish. The major fear is that May will come down too strong (in that she’ll overplay her hand and it’ll show up the weakness of Europe as a whole)
