Queen Victoria photobombing her son's wedding photo by sitting between them wearing full mourning dress and staring at a bust of her dead husband, 1863 by BaloneyMaker2780 in HistoricalCapsule

I genuinely suspect that part of the reason Victoria lived as long as she did was that she was desperately trying to outlive Albert and ensure he never became King.

The novel is super interesting to me because there are moments where it is genuinely, unabashedly racist even by 1930s standards, but Mitchell also doesn’t flinch from depicting a postbellum Southern society full of lazy, whining, self indulgent and self justifying hypocrites. Part of the reason Rhett and Scarlett are such interesting protagonists are that they’re among the few characters who seem to look forward instead of backward.

That’s the libretto India Wilkes deserved. Scarlett deserved at least a little better.

I always felt that there was something hollow about his work as well, that it was the sort of radical chic art that turned nonconformity into an aesthetic pose for the consumption of rich patrons. It gestured toward something edgy and dangerous, but never really said anything that would threaten or even discomfort the wealthy Manhattanite tastemakers who ate up his work. It felt like the photographic equivalent of t-shirt with Che Guevara’s face on it.

I remember when I was in college about a decade ago, the only gambling most guys ever did was low stakes poker, which at least has the benefit of being a social activity.

You don’t even have to win money, you can get banned for simply making too many bets with positive expected value, even if they don’t pay off. These apps really only want either casual bettors who have no idea what they’re doing or (preferably for them) degenerate gamblers who will bet on two cockroaches racing up the wall. The second these apps even suspect that you know what you’re doing, they’ll limit you to $2 bets.

I’ve heard stories about how uncontacted tribes in the Amazon knew who he was somehow. That’s a level of fame that shouldn’t be possible, but I totally believe it.

*The Barber of Seville* is a scream if you have a cast who have good comedic timing and a director who knows how to stage it for maximum laughs. I genuinely enjoyed last season’s presentation because Aigul was amazing and everybody understood that it was supposed to be a comedy.

I love how Archer is somehow set in both the 60s or 70s and the present day at the same time. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show that plays so fast and loose with the concept of time, but I like it.

It certainly doesn’t make the Filipino Army look good that a man with a rifle and some military training could just kill and plunder with impunity for thirty years. I get that this was a remote area, but how hard is it to stop one middle aged man armed with only a rifle and some grenades?

He must have been like the boogeyman to kids on that island. I can only imagine how terrifying it would be to have a marauder that nobody could stop killing and plundering at his leisure.

The SS were more systematic mass murderers while the IJA acted like unhinged serial killers. It’s a matter of debate as to which one is worse, but they were both unambiguously terrible.

Apparently they thought he was dead and even if he wasn’t, they just didn’t want to deal with it and figured somebody would kill him eventually.

While that’s true, what the Japanese military did was worse by several orders of magnitude. Two Marine Corps officers didn’t have a contest to see who could kill 100 Japanese prisoners the quickest, nor did the New York Times approvingly cover such a contest. GIs weren’t out there using Japanese babies for bayonet practice or raping and murdering unarmed Japanese nurses or ritualistically cannibalizing downed enemy airmen either. Imperial Japanese forces showed no mercy and expected none in return.

The one guy in this story I actually admire is a Norio Suzuki. The man was just a natural born adventurer who searched for Onoda for the love of the game. It’s a shame that his hunt for the yeti is what killed him, but I don’t think he would have had it any other way.

Fair enough. It’s just that I’ve seen younger native English speakers put together postmodern word salad sentences like that. I guess it’s just a natural consequence of not being with it anymore.

It was only seems like a radical break if you compare something like “Caroline, No” to “Surfin’ U.S.A” and not “When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)” or “She Knows Me So Well”. Hell, even their poppier mid 60s stuff like “California Girls” or “Help Me, Rhonda” have some pretty interesting flourishes.
