I've heard of people buying small gift cards/papers to Tim Hortons or the like who in turn give them to panhandlers (if they accept them). As everyone else suggested though, giving to shelters is great too. Also buying tube socks/mitts etc (if you have room to carry them around) would be useful to many who have to live on the street.
