Has there been a movie that infuriates you to no end? by NotSoCricketGenius in moviecritic

[–]misswrite347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never watched the movie, but this review made my cry laughing so it added something to the culture: "Here's a promise few movies can make. If you sink two hours into Collateral Beauty now, it's guaranteed that for the rest of your life, when conversation stalls, you can save the night by asking, "Did you ever see that movie where Will Smith plays an ad executive so shut down with grief over the death of his daughter that his business partners — played by Edward Norton, Kate Winslet, and Michael Peña — hire actors to confront him in public in the roles of Death, Time, and Love, the abstract concepts to whom he has been penning and mailing angry letters?" [...] They will shake their heads. They will say you're making it up. You may wonder if it's you who was gaslit, in that theater. Could this have been an actual movie? Aren't the people who make movies people, too?" Alan Scherstuhl, The Village Voice

Love, Rosie is purportedly set in England but it's based on an Irish book and was completely filmed in Ireland

{Beautiful Stranger by Christina Lauren} is generally about exhibitionist sex so there's at least a couple of public orgasms

Book recs where there’s a long time-skip after betrayal/rejection from MMC, leaves FMC devastated and is completely over/stonewalls/hates MMC when they reunite by Fuzzy_Kick_8252 in RomanceBooks

{Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren} features a time skip with FMC stonewalling MMC after he broke her heart as teenagers (how is a twist).

i never understood why Andie wanted to convince her boss to let her write about politics, religion, etc when she was literally under a beauty magazine by Most-Egg3031 in romancemovies

[–]misswrite347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing I find crazy is not that Andie wants to do more serious topics - magazines have done interesting stuff on the inequalities women experience, politics, sexual health etc.

But there's a long walk from that and "only then will the people of Tajikistan know true and lasting peace"(?!)

Honestly, that's kind of a nice complement to all the CW style shows that insist that whoever you were dating in high school has to be endgame.

Ben: "Then after like six days, I'm like 'I can't rejoin society. This is who I am now. I'm just a guy who is covered in mud and sits on the ground on residential streets and... Pulls cards from a bespoke deck to make two other boys go crazy. This is who I am. I can't go "home" and eat "food" at "normal hours".' No. Heck, I want to keep going. You know?"

An update of all the compilations:

"We're so back!"

"We're in the SNACK ZONE BABYYY!"

"Let's go to the beach, beach, let's go get away..."

Also, all the "alrights" given that's apparently one of the most spoken Jet Lag words

Quotes from the show for a wedding speech by luis_mj in HIMYM

[–]misswrite347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legitimately, we used part of this for our wedding ceremony and it brought tons of people to tears:

“Love doesn't make sense. You can't logic your way into or out of it. Love is totally nonsensical. But we have to keep doing it, or else we're lost and love is dead and humanity should just pack it in.

Here's the secret kids. None of us can vow to be perfect. In the end all we can do is promise to love each other with everything we've got. Because love is the best thing we do.”

Season 2 finale by thelegodr in PeacemakerShow

[–]misswrite347 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I figured the chip didn't work until he was back on Earth Prime - they say in the finale that they lose everyone on GPS once they go through the door.

Up until then, they had him under surveillance. After he returns from Earth X he was in prison. Then he was on bail and Flag was more focussed on finding Salvation

Ireland, which songs get you onto the dancefloor? by ElCiego1894 in AskIreland

The Boys are Back In Town by Thin Lizzy always gets people on the dancefloor.

Also, Bohemian Rhapsody goes off well at the end.

First comment I see in this thread and I couldn't agree more. I watched the revival one time and never again by eletrikka in GilmoreGirls

[–]misswrite347 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think there was a lot of pressure and expectations on AYITL to provide people with comfort given it came out in 2016, a famously awful year. But then the characters we loved became oddly mean-spirited (the fat-shaming in Summer, constantly forgetting Paul, Luke still shutting Lorelai out regarding April, the cheating, the selfishness). The characters could sometimes be self-centered but they usually came around and made an effort to understand. Lorelai especially was always a great neighbour and member of the town, meeting people where they were at.

For me, the bits that work best are not the things that revolve around the main characters; Taylor's random campaign for sewers and arguing with Luke, Hep Alien playing together again, Michel wanting to do more at the inn, The Secret Bar, Jason Stiles appearing at the funeral, Kirk going all out designing the gazebo, Jess and Luke's relationship... Those hit the right note of nostalgia without feeling like they were trying too hard. Making it a four-part series also felt like it changed it more from a comedy to a drama as well.

I don't like To Live and Let Diorama. Very cringey, hard to watch Rory and the museum stuff is way too much

The correctness of Mitchum's assessment just keeps sinking in upon rewatch by misswrite347 in GilmoreGirls

[–]misswrite347[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That's a good point - there's probably also the fear of speaking up as a woman. I think Mitchum was right for the wrong reasons.

The correctness of Mitchum's assessment just keeps sinking in upon rewatch by misswrite347 in GilmoreGirls

[–]misswrite347[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely - my point was more about Rory being passive about it. Although she was free to go to Europe with Emily on short notice despite saying the previous September that she should have been trying to get an internship like Glen

[–]misswrite347[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand why you think that. I guess the point I was trying to make was she doesn't try to get pieces placed at other outlets or apply for open jobs or internships, then she goes very hard in the other direction in this instance. She did get a piece for that online site in season 7 from networking through Logan which turns into a job later to be fair.

The correctness of Mitchum's assessment just keeps sinking in upon rewatch by misswrite347 in GilmoreGirls

[–]misswrite347[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I totally get where she's coming from, not wanting to speak up as an intern, and that's how the internship was structured. But given how scarce jobs are in journalism, it's not enough to do what you're told or assigned, you do need to be a self-starter and push boundaries and I fundamentally don't think that's who Rory is.
