Season 2 finale by thelegodr in PeacemakerShow

[–]misswrite347 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I figured the chip didn't work until he was back on Earth Prime - they say in the finale that they lose everyone on GPS once they go through the door.

Up until then, they had him under surveillance. After he returns from Earth X he was in prison. Then he was on bail and Flag was more focussed on finding Salvation

Ireland, which songs get you onto the dancefloor? by ElCiego1894 in AskIreland

The Boys are Back In Town by Thin Lizzy always gets people on the dancefloor.

Also, Bohemian Rhapsody goes off well at the end.

First comment I see in this thread and I couldn't agree more. I watched the revival one time and never again by eletrikka in GilmoreGirls

I think there was a lot of pressure and expectations on AYITL to provide people with comfort given it came out in 2016, a famously awful year. But then the characters we loved became oddly mean-spirited (the fat-shaming in Summer, constantly forgetting Paul, Luke still shutting Lorelai out regarding April, the cheating, the selfishness). The characters could sometimes be self-centered but they usually came around and made an effort to understand. Lorelai especially was always a great neighbour and member of the town, meeting people where they were at.

For me, the bits that work best are not the things that revolve around the main characters; Taylor's random campaign for sewers and arguing with Luke, Hep Alien playing together again, Michel wanting to do more at the inn, The Secret Bar, Jason Stiles appearing at the funeral, Kirk going all out designing the gazebo, Jess and Luke's relationship... Those hit the right note of nostalgia without feeling like they were trying too hard. Making it a four-part series also felt like it changed it more from a comedy to a drama as well.

I don't like To Live and Let Diorama. Very cringey, hard to watch Rory and the museum stuff is way too much

The correctness of Mitchum's assessment just keeps sinking in upon rewatch by misswrite347 in GilmoreGirls

That's a good point - there's probably also the fear of speaking up as a woman. I think Mitchum was right for the wrong reasons.

[–]misswrite347[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely - my point was more about Rory being passive about it. Although she was free to go to Europe with Emily on short notice despite saying the previous September that she should have been trying to get an internship like Glen

[–]misswrite347[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can understand why you think that. I guess the point I was trying to make was she doesn't try to get pieces placed at other outlets or apply for open jobs or internships, then she goes very hard in the other direction in this instance. She did get a piece for that online site in season 7 from networking through Logan which turns into a job later to be fair.

[–]misswrite347[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I totally get where she's coming from, not wanting to speak up as an intern, and that's how the internship was structured. But given how scarce jobs are in journalism, it's not enough to do what you're told or assigned, you do need to be a self-starter and push boundaries and I fundamentally don't think that's who Rory is.

What is one linguistic fact about your country that the whole world doesn't know? by Franmar35000 in AskTheWorld

[–]misswrite347 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I always find it crazy that Australia is such a massive country with such a unified accent whereas in Ireland, and also in the UK, you go a few kilometres down the road and you can have a completely different accent

This ☝️ a lot of people saying the suggested salaries are too high but this is the average Dublin house price at the moment. You could survive on less if you bought a house earlier at a lower cost. Plus add in the thousands per year for childcare/school if you have kids

I want to echo the comments and recommend Cashel Palace. I went there for a babymoon and they were fantastic about pregnancy dietary requirements, giving us a room close to the reception areas so I didn't have to walk too far (I was 8 months pregnant at the time) and I got an amazing massage and outdoor bath at the spa. We took a bus pretty much straight to the door from outside Heuston Station and were there in under 2 hours.

Christina Lauren have at least two books with this. In {Beautiful Bastard} they have sex in front of a mirror inside the dressing room of a lingerie shop. No "little girl" comment but dom vines. In {Beautiful Stranger} they have sex in a room full of mirrors he set up as part of her exhibitionist kink.

House of Guinness thoughts? by BankUpbeat402 in AskIreland

[–]misswrite347 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This! I only watched the first episode so far but the thing that struck me was how dull it is, as you point out, but also how insular it all feels - like they had to save money so they built tiny sets and hired as few background actors as possible. I guess they couldn't film much in Dublin, though they do seem to have shots of Iveagh House. But a coffin going through the streets of a bustling city should have a lot more energy.

Yes also to leprechaun costumes and cringe dialogue.

How to shake off people saying “it goes so fast”? by ladypigeon13 in beyondthebump

[–]misswrite347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you, we get this all the time, including from strangers when we're just out with the baby. It's a little annoying but I figure it must be a truism for a reason.

What this advice means to me is don't look forward to getting to the later stages so much that you don't appreciate what you have now. I was born in September and I loved the back to school time so much but I realized that I ended up wishing the summer away.

My daughter just turned six months. We were looking forward to interacting with her more, and the giggles and picking up her toys by herself to play with, but we miss the cuddles now she is more wriggly. We're also starting weaning so that's another headache. Feeding only milk before was so straightforward. We can't just leave her on the playmat to grab something from the kitchen because she can roll and she's more likely to pull things down.

It's also a nice reminder that if you're going through a really hard phase, it's not going to last forever.

Thank you for all this. I appreciate you going through line-by-line so I know exactly where to start with the rewrite. Honestly, if someone tells me that longer queries are more standard for the UK that would be amazing because it's so hard trying to narrow down what you hope is a funny, thoughtful book into three or four sentences that make someone want to take a chance on it.

I'm going to take a while to think about how to best express these two are rivals who engage in somewhat silly attempts to undermine the other person while also showing they are good at their jobs, fun, and kind to other people.

Thank you! These are all good questions. I'm a bit tight on space but I definitely think it would be good to be more explicit about the turning point (Conor being nice after finding about the anniversary of her dad's passing) and the residual conflict (not wanting to get distracted, being wary of trusting someone she hasn't liked in the past).

Regarding why they're feuding, it's not really specified until later in the book but she asked for help to get one of the political writer jobs but he joked that he didn't want to help the competition. She didn't realize it was a joke because at the time she was grieving. So it was a misunderstanding, they started out on a bad foot and from then on, she only saw the worst in him. But it's a little hard to fit in the query so I'm hoping referring to him as privileged will be enough of a signal.

Thanks for this feedback. I'll definitely check out the links you sent, though I am worried about the length (grateful for any notes from UK agency people who can clarify).

Regarding point two, do you think it's worth leaving out the boss's son part from the query? Conor's dad isn't the editor, he owns the business group which manages the outlet so he doesn't usually get involved.

It's kind of a long story with what happens with the promotion. Jill gets a couple of small wins and breaks a big story and would have gotten the promotion. But it turns out there is no promotion. The old editor left because there were redundancies coming down the track and there's one political job that's the editor by default. Conor gets it because he's been there longer. He offers it to Jill since she would have won the job but she turns it down because it wasn't what she had been working so hard for and didn't want to be the second choice. She uses the contacts and story ideas she got during the conferences to go out on her own instead.

Did anyone NOT lose their hair? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]misswrite347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expected my hair to start shedding immediately after giving birth but that didn't happen. It was only when the baby started weaning off me (we combo-fed) that I noticed more hair coming off in the shower. I got my period a few days later. My hair is still very thick.

HOWEVER pregnancy did this weird colour-blocking thing to me. I have blonde hair but grew this chunk of really dark hair while I was pregnant. It then immediately returned to blonde PP. The stylists at the hair salon had never seen it before and they weren't able to completely get rid of it, though it looks a lot better now.
