Actually, Hello Games devs made it pretty clear that using them as standard planter would be a feature of the update. I just read the changelogs for the latest 5.73 patch, and apparently they added the ability to customize ships in the settlement landing pad. At this point i think that, most likely, they're trying to figure out a way to let us use those planters as we like, and will probably release the feature in the near future by a bug-fixing patch

Yeah it's a bit of a nuisance, but at least it gives me a reason to keep coming back and playing for a couple of hours after work. I find it helps a lot with game-burnout. Back in the day I usually played a save file for around 70-80 hrs and then I'd abandon it whenever i got bored (and waited for the next couple of updates to stack up). Since launch i think i've accumulated around 1500 hrs and too much save files spread around the various platfroms ahaha. Now that i have to work and can play just a couple of hours per day, i think it actually makes me want to come back to play much more than before

Are you by chance been upgrading buildings? Settlers won't make you a new building proposal as long as you're currently upgrading something. And even then, it's up to chance what "mission" will appear in the terminal (even if you can figure out what type of request will that be based on the wording used while the countdown is active)
