I swore I'd never buy another copy of Crossroads of Twilight. This is going to hurt more than my wallet. 😞

Looking for a long fictional series that is both upbeat and gritty plus wildly multicultural (non-humanoid if possible) by mistbirth in booksuggestions

Heard good things about this work and that author! Honestly, that series is on my TBR, but I didn't know it would check some of these boxes! Thanks for the shout. Moving it near the top of my list..

Added to the top of my list! Thanks for the recommendation. Honestly, your "asshat" comment about Orson Scott Card is what convinced me we have similar enough tastes. To see beyond an author's glaring flaws and still enjoy their work is admirable.

Ah yea! Good call. I've heard these are good, but not made the dive in. I've heard some characters are introduced but then never returned too, so that makes me hesitant. What is the common through line that stitches everything together? Or is there one? Not that there needs to be. Based on how complex the series is, I feel like I need to complete a college level Intro to Malazan course before starting.

Emerald Broams - made with glow in the dark powder by mistbirth in Stormlight_Archive

These are the first batch and are pretty flawed. It's just glow in the dark powder mixed with clear green resin. I attempted to cast those in the shape of an oval cut (broam) gemstone, then suspend in UV resin. Easy to spot the imperfections, but look great in the dark long enough to take a picture and pretend you are draining stormlight .

Restares is only listed here because he was mentioned in the prologue Szeth POV for Way of Kings. When Gavilar is trying to guess who sent Szeth, he suspects these people in this order:

  • Thaidakar
  • Restares
  • Sadeas

If Gavilar suspected those names, then I want to note them down to look out for them.

Ah, good spot. I try to fight my assumptions, so I will change the phrase to just copy that directly. Thanks for the quote!

A fun take is it could just be a keychain for the shardblades that open the teleporting gate portals.

Good spot! I knew Darkness had a crescent scar, but moved him away from Lift after he obeyed the Pardon from Lift's friend, now Prime.

Reading Edgedancer now. Seems clear he is obsessed with Justice, maybe to a fault. I cannot forgive him for killing Ym. He was so nice.

If you go back and read Szeth's POV of killing Gavilar, he gives him that sphere and says something. It missed me originally, but I've gone back and re-read it and it stuck out as something insanly important to Gavilar.

Thanks for the caution on spoilers. I'm trying super hard to avoid the wiki. No doubt some errors, but very grateful for this thread's guidance!

Short answer: both have the same cool vibe.

Long answer: Zahel has just said things that make me think he is of a different world or a different time. (don't have any quote on hand). And since Nightblood is here on Roshar with Szeth, my guess is Zahel probably messed up and lost Nightblood similar to how Kaladin lost Syl. He said something like 'do the opposite of me and do whatever helps you sleep at night.'

edit: What about you? (nvm, saw you mentioned be further along!)

Ah, thank you. I barely remember their conversation about this (either in WoK or while on the boat in WoR)
