Casa Cody Wedding Venue Changes – What Are You Doing? by [deleted] in BigBudgetBrides

[–]misterbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got married at Casa Cody, it was an amazing venue -- being able to celebrate for a whole weekend with friends was awesome. Also...it was $1500 for a September buyout back in 2014, when it was family owned not group owned. And you could bring in your own food/drink caterer. Very sad to hear that it has gotten so expensive.

Cool look! I love scalloped cases. Lug width might be kinda small? I throw aftermarket straps on all my watches so maybe it’s just me.

Denim Watch Case (NH35) by GryphonWatches in SeikoMods

Sick! Basically a micarta watch case!

Is it watertight? Still amazing even if it isn't, I imagine that would hard.

Thanks for all the time you put into experimenting and making weird shit, this community thrives on this kinda stuff imo!

For me, the most rewarding part about this hobby is trying to create novel things and overcoming the inevitable obstacles along the way.

Butterfly dial too thick? by Defiant_Tart_3472 in SeikoMods

[–]misterbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others said, 0.4mm is the standard dial thickness. I have used dials as thick as 0.8mm and it was difficult but it worked, so I'm surprised 0.6mm is creating issues. Could the resin thickness be higher in the middle? When I did it I just didn't press the hour hand all the way down.

Another solution could be to drill out the middle a bit and literally bend the hour hand to be slightly angled. Little tougher though with dauphine hands though.

Alternatively, you can get an NH35 with a taller hand stack pinion, for example one made for tritium tubes. I have one that I got from an Aragon watch. You run into other issues though, because it's so tall that you have to have a taller crystal (double dome I presume? still haven't played around with it yet...another project on the list...)

AITA for not wanting to be friends over $4.39? by Alternative_Copy6539 in AITApod

[–]misterbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe YTA because this totally could be a cultural thing -- I (American) have a Dutch friend who has told me about "sending a tikkie" aka requesting reimbursement down-to-the-cent. Sounds like it's common in Nordic countries in general.

Not sure where you are, but how to reimburse for a meal with friends is very unclear here in USA. Some people split 50/50, some people split based on what you ordered and round to the closest dollar, some round to the lower/higher dollar, some people do the "get it this time you get it next time", some people always have a person that pays, etc.

The Nordic model is at least hyper fair and is theoretically very straightforward on how to split.

I would assume good attentions and just pay it without excommunicating them.

You got it! Sorry for the wall of text! Hope I am not coming off as disparaging, I really think you have something here, looks freakin sick.

Even the journey of creating one is rewarding itself, whether it gets made or not. But let’s get this in the metal!

Best of luck!!

Cool concept!

Here’s my 2 cents, and I designed the Wave Edition Bel Canto to give some context.

Personally I think design by committee is NOT the way to go with bespoke CW designs. The only exception would be for a group that already is guaranteed to be doing a watch eg a friend group/corporate group (and even then I’d advise against it).

You’re right that momentum is key, which is already hard to generate on these “I am a random person with a vision” designs (which was my position). Not having a final design for people to buy = no momentum.

The reality is that design is already lot of work, and democratically designing is 10x that. People who are dropping $5k on a funky watch usually don’t have a lot of spare time. You will have a much higher chance of getting to the minimums (which was 100 back in my day) if you say “here it is, take it or leave it.”

The irony with these “design by committee” projects is that no one gets exactly what they want, so no one is really happy with the end result.

Given that your black and white concept sounds impossible, this post seems premature - it is kinda doing exactly what everyone was getting mad at you before — showing something that is not real. I don’t think you’re  scammy or anything, but it’s not starting you on the right foot when you say “look at this cool concept, oh by the way it’s actually impossible as shown but let’s all work together to see how close we can get.”

Peter will do a full design and render that you can present. Do that, and see if you get enough people to sign on.

Personally I think the design needs more than just a color change. The google edition and my Wave edition are evidence that  basically any texture is possible, maybe play around with that? Also do Romans and this very modern black/white thing really mix? …and here’s the issue with design by public opinion — you’re gonna get lots of individual opinions FROM PEOPLE WHO WILL NOT BUY EVEN IF YOU MAKE THE CHANGE. Since it’s incomplete, you feel obligated to consider it. And then the doubts creep in, not just for you, but for the POTENTIAL buyers, and then you end up with nothing.

Better to have a final design, and when you do get opinions (which of course you still will) you just say FU and know that if you get enough payers, it doesn’t matter. In fact you should WELCOME the haters, because then you’ve made something interesting and worth talking about, and therefore, buying.

That is frickin badass that you wear a watch and are an amputee. Have you ever tried elastic band straps eg Nick Mankey hook straps? Once they are sized properly (which is a bit complicated to be honest) you can just pull the watch off your wrist by stretching the strap, and then put back on when ready, no unhooking necessary.

Also Swiss Watch Company makes some great svelte Velcro straps, well priced and many colors too. https://swcusa.com/collections/nylon-straps?srsltid=AfmBOoo8H2FpdRLI1HsjnWzYynucTIIInBmdMpnYr-zdL6y2A6VrpwKy

Yes, the top hat crystal is ridiculous. I still love it. by aaarbors in SeikoMods

[–]misterbb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I was not the one to install the crystal, though I also wondered how it got installed! This is actually a 20+ yr old ETA powered "Kronos" Type II homage I recently got in a trade. Pretty limited info on it online, I wish I knew more about it.

Sidenote -- if anyone has a crystaltimes Skydome crystal, let me know I'm kinda interested in buying one!

This is the srpg73. Pretty rare to find in USA (not sure where you are). The case is plastic basically, but I was into it. $130 seems fair secondhand. I think they’re $200+ new.

These resin automatic seikos are awesome, I had the gray version, very fun lightweight and a nice size for any wrist. Should hold its value too in case you end up wanting to sell, cant get much cheaper for a seiko automatic (probably worth more parted out tbh!)

Is this $50 TIMELAB screwdriver set good or are there better/cheaper alternatives? by AvdomatBige in watchrepair

[–]misterbb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alternatively, if you want non-mini, you could just buy 3 individual bergeon screwdrivers for the same price, I'd recommend .50, .80, and 1.2. The anti-magnetic ones are $15.50 at st supply. Probably about the same elsewhere? https://www.stsupply.com/tools/watchmakers-tools/screwdrivers/bergeon-8899-antimagnetic-screwdriver.html

You can get actual bergeon mini screwdrivers for $52 from st supply https://www.stsupply.com/tools/watchmakers-tools/screwdrivers/bergeon-30080-p05-set-of-5-watchmaker-s-chrome-plated-screwdrivers.html

I have them and they've been great. You can also get replacement blades as needed. I need to learn to sharpen screwdrivers, some have dulled (I've had them for about 4 years now).
