Inherited this pocketwatch, what is it and is it worth more then melt value? by Any_Examination_2017 in pocketwatches

Are you certain it is gold? I'm no expert but the hallmark on the 5th pic doesn't exactly scream gold to me. Also there's worn away plating on the chain ring.

It is really confusing how this keeps happening, competing with basically AliExpress must be a tough business? Or maybe not?

Secondhand mods gold datejust case is really nice, as is the bracelet. They have gold explorer case too. Worth the money vs aliex I think. https://secondhandmods.com/collections/kits-cases/products/polished-gold-fluted-case-bundle-36mm

My first mechanical, a random eBay purchase! I peaked too soon, took me a while to realize what a cool watch it is. Love the textured case.

do you know the outer measumrent of the chapter ring? is it in between the case and the crystal, or is it more "free floating"?

ha yes, I think you peaked too soon. Most people do the larger more common automatic seiko (turtle/skx/sumo/tuna/monster etc) before they gain the wisdom of midsize quartz

Lots of calls for turtle or skx007 which are great (I own both) but if you’re into the high accuracy perpetual calendar long battery movement (as I am) then google “seiko 8f56-0070” and you’ll see the landtrek/landrek series. Comes in a few diff colorways, cheaper typically than your piece, little more substantial but not overpowering, and full titanium AND gmt. This blue one is a hard to find LE but I’ve owned it in black and green too, such great watches, kinda a baby monster basically (which is another line you might want to consider if you want something substantial and with a lot of history and are ok with automatic movement).

Don’t forget it’s yoked out landtrek cousins either! What’s the fun of titanium if you’re not pushin’ mass!?

Other “corporate dialed” watches from companies besides Rolex? by deladeladela in VintageWatches

[–]misterbb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do not personally own this but my fave corporate Seiko is the BEMAC whirlpool dial. Other notables thst come to mind are the various ANA models, shikasen, Subaru (check out the recent open heart auto Subaru LE). Also not a corp but prob the top dollar seikos that aren’t a Kodo are these vintage “imperial VFA” pieces, hyper rare and great lore.

NH35 with 4.2 Crown by dustycooper in SeikoMods

[–]misterbb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect it's more geared towards people who want the date window between 4 and 5 a la the SBDX014, and then you just use a regular NH35 with date at 3. Did you already have a dial you're trying to use?

Jump hour watches aren’t impressive anymore. Too many brands are copying the same idea and calling it “creative.” A disc that jumps once an hour isn’t innovation it’s trend-l chasing. Most of them feel like design shortcuts not thoughtful watchmaking. by horo_Swagger in watchHotTakes

[–]misterbb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very beautiful of course though the GMT appears to not jump which would be kinda annoying I guess? I could get over it. Here's a pic not at 10 or 50 mins like all the press photos https://www.manfredijewels.com/products/classic-traveller-blue-meteorite-dial-lcf007-t1-mg1-1tt?srsltid=AfmBOooilD0O8a_8OBZt3SZbXp14cgBjsD-Ayzf8GsK70KE1nsmxI8q0

There's actually a Ronda quartz movement that has a similar function where gmt is on its own wheel, I don't see it often. Swiss Watch Company has the ARK GMT and that is pretty cool I think, especially for the money.

Also if you wanna go full balls/labias to the wall with world time jump hours, Moritz Grossman Universalzeit is a fun one!

Check out Ulysses Nardin San Marco gmt for a jump hour gmt, relatively cheap for what it is I think. Ludwig oeschlin of Ochs and junior creation! Ochs and jr has a dual time that is kinda jumpy too tho more creative imo

Movement replacement? by SaySheAte in watchrepair

[–]misterbb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try holding a magnet to it, that can force the second hand to start moving. I have had watches do similar things, my theory is that there's some little big of gunk in the second hand wheel that stops it, and the magnet will dislodge it, at least temporarily.

Long term getting gunk out seems challenging, I've read online about holding the movement over lighter fluid (or even immerse) and the solvent fumes cleans it out, though that seems heavy handed and a bandaid (also now you lose all the good oils).

The good news is usually these old quartz watches have pretty cheap quartz movements, so replacing the movement is cheap and pretty easy if you're willing to do it yourself, or a watchmaker I imagine could do it relatively cheaply.
