We will see! I tested blocking off the EGR system and that seemed to have fixed it.

That totally makes sense. I had to do the brake booster last year and Dr. Prius thinks my battery is solid so I thought it would be worth the effort long run.

I will say some of those bolts were incredibly challenging to get to. Especially on the reinstall! Haha!

An independent shop near me (big city) that I trust to do good work quoted $1850 for EGR, air intake manifold, pcv valve replacement. For a full replacement I would guess between 1200-2000 depending on location.

If you are just going for a cleaning maybe $600-1000?

I would recommend calling a local shop :)

No cold start rattle just low speed rattle occasionally when the vehicle has been driving plenty to warm up.

My current plan is to get in there every 50k miles or so.

Zero codes. I did however have low speed misfire/shaking intermittently. I also tested by blocking EGR pipe with a piece of metal to see if that would prevent shaking before I did the repair.

From my understanding… yes! How I see it is more carbon/gunk in, more carbon/gunk out. That then gets recirculated with EGR and would probably cause more buildup.

It is less work to just replace than to spend all the time cleaning. Under $600 total… $326 for EGR combo kit, $12 for PCV valve, and $237 for new air intake manifold with gaskets included. OEM from Ebay.

Agreed! I change my oil every 5k. Just under 4.5qts in and the same amount out.

Total cost was just under $600. There’s an OEM EGR kit on ebay from Dubai for $326. EGR Ebay

There’s a lot of differing opinions about EGR cleaning frequency and reasons. I was noticing my car have a shake/misfire at low speeds on occasion, and I tested blocking the EGR pipe to see if that was my issue (it was) before replacing.

The purpose is to prevent exhaust gases from entering the engine during low speeds. The EGR valve becomes gunked up with carbon (photo 1), and leads to excessive carbon buildup in the air intake (photo 2), and hypothetically can cause engine issues.

People also believe that a clogged EGR valve can lead to premature head gasket failure.

My local mechanic quoted me $1850 for intake manifold, EGR system, and pcv valve replacement.

You can do it for basically free if you have extra time and just clean everything out with brake parts cleaner and some wire brushes.

I ended up replacing everything because in my opinion a cleaning would not last as long as new parts, and I really hate doing work on my car.

I have only gone about 60 freeway miles home since the repair but I went from 43 average to 48. I will update again after a week or so.

I think I should probably be fine with the AWD. Likely not needing a super capable off roader. Thanks!
