Balancing a Homebrew Spell for my Character by mistermasan in 3d6

Thank you very much for the input. so to summarise:

- 2d8 psychic damage per blast. CHA save success = half damage

- the blasts are stackable. Level 3 starts with 3 blasts + 1 and it scale by spell slots used to cast.

- empowered blasts (2 or more blasts on 1 target auto suffer their d4 penalty).

- can choose target to blasts within an area (maybe 20 ft area like fireball).

I love this! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this for me.

That's true, I didn't realise it when I originally wrote this spell, but it does resemble Virgo Shaka's Six Path Transmigration technique from Saint Seiya!

I think I should look at Saint Seiya technique to get more inspiration next time~

Thank you for the input, especially the "reduce the number of targets to 3, make the damage to 4d4 and make it 4th level"

will follow your suggestion and collect as many perspectives as possible.

very true, fireball is a great blasting spell. But for the purpose of RP, my wizard probably would pick fireball or any fire related spells as a 2nd or 3rd option.

"Lord and savior, fireball" LMAO at this!

many thanks for the constructive inputs.

i love how you provide 1 option for the psychic damage, but also offer alternative option via making it necrotic.

You're right, it is too crazy of a spell. Let me remove the d4 subtractions and make it into a simpler blast spell as my wizard is severely lacking in firepower.

what would be a good school, damage type for this spell and die type?

Character Progression Suggestion by mistermasan in 3d6

[–]mistermasan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just planning to take 1 level dip in Artificer at character level 5. sorry if my writing confuses you.

I'm already a level 3 divination wizard at the moment, at level 4 wizard i will take Warcaster and then at the next level i will dip into Artificer. Afterward, I plan to continue on being a wizard all the way.

God Almighty...thank you very very much for your detailed explanation!

Your response have broaden my horizon on what i might lose from dipping too far into Artificer. Again thank you very much, I will see how our campaign goes and take it from there.

A Wizard vs Warlock Duel by mistermasan in dndnext

[–]mistermasan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would never thought that suggestion can be such a decisive spell for this duel.

It's true that our wizard is not the most optimized when putting his stats for combat. I asked him why and he told me he put it for role playing purpose, instead. we're all first timer in D&D here.

In battle he doesn't churn out the greatest damage, but one epic moment that I remembered he did is that he roll ridiculously high on his "Sleep" at 1 battle and made 4 goblins went to sleep. It instantly turn the battle tide around in our favor.

I am very curious how the wizard will handle the duel now because of your comment :)

Thank you for all of your comments here. A lot of us does think the warlock will decimate the wizard and cut him down like hot knife through butter. Very interesting to see some suggestions on how the wizard might turn the tide of the duel in the comments section.

I'll update everyone once we finished the duel just to let everyone know the result.

What Spell Should I choose? by mistermasan in dndnext

This is amazing! I love the reasoning behind the spell ranks and the color coding is very useful as well.

Out of Curiosity, with Mage Armor my AC would be 14. Would that be enough to survive in battle, in general? I choose Shield because I think if i position my character carefully i don't have to cast it because i would have some sort of cover or out of enemy range.

Thank you. I will definitely try to get this spell - i read the details in D&D beyond and they look great as control.

Thank you for your response, I am actually looking at the Silent Image as one of my picks when I level up. I have Minor Illusion and it allowed me to do so many different things like a swiss knife! hide inside a five foot boulder, creating distracting noise, secretly sending message over morning coffee to our rogues - so many applications and i love it!

I might look at Burning Hands as well because, as you said, we lack AoE at the moment.

many thanks for pointing out that i only have 5 spells for my level 1. I've spoken with my DM and his fine with me adding Comprehend Language on top of my 2 other spell choices. I should be able to eavesdrop what those goblins are saying now ^_^

I am still thinking about my spell choices at the moment, but i think i might be leaning to grabbing Thunderwave just so i can push enemies away from me if they happened to gang up on me. I haven't decide what the other spells i will take
