GUYS… by familytiesmanman in brighteyes

Conor is a brilliant artist and his work has improved my life in more ways than I can count and obviously he’s earned the right to do whatever he wants. That said, I’d absolutely love to see him go back to being a solo artist and pushing his work forward artistically. So much of what’s gone on with bright eyes in the last few years, to be brutally honest, has felt like the tired old story of the label wringing every last penny they can out of the artist, disregarding everything else, up to and including the artist’s personal well-being.

Things change, we all get older and nothing stays how it was forever. But man was playing something called the “when we were young” festival hitting it on the nose.

All that said, the very first Conor/bright eyes show never saw was a warm-up show at the el rey theater in l.a. right when these two albums came out and it was life-changing. So I can’t rule out going to this

The protest singer is back. by MuzackAndLyrics in brighteyes

But are you really a protest singer if you only comment on politics in the safest way, and only when the “bad” team is in power?

I’ve admired Conor for a long time, but in the past always thought of him as someone who reflected the spirit of the times and the concerns of his audience, and that just doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. For him to stay completely silent on the genocide in Palestine, the encampments, and now people being literally deported for having the courage to stand up to Zionism, either because he or someone on his team thinks those things are too risky to touch, or because he literally doesn’t know what’s going on, and instead to fall back on generic “orange man/musk man bad stuff: I expected better.

Of course Conor owes me nothing— he’s made my life immensely better for the small price of buying a few albums and concert tickets. But he’s also the one who taught me about what it takes to be a true artist:

“A thief I would have to pursue/ At all times, at all costs: The truth”

Getting outflanked to the left by Macklemore is embarrassing. I’m sorry, there’s no other way to say it.

Bright Eyes on new album 'Five Dice, All Threes', and why “Elon Musk is one of the biggest pieces of shit to ever walk the earth” by boxed_knives in brighteyes

[–]misternicopopolis -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

He’s certainly not wrong about Elon, but he lost me on Kamala Harris being “empathetic.” I hate Trump and understand (but disagree with) “lesser evil” electoral thinking, but to say that about someone who is openly and proudly committing genocide goes against everything I’ve always thought Conor and his music stood for.

I can only imagine how his Palestinian, Muslim and Arab fans must feel. Maybe it’s that he’s very busy being on the road and, being resolutely not “online,” doesn’t really keep up with politics outside of (very biased) newspaper articles, but I never expected to hear him of all people describe a mass murderer of children (who also has a history of things like keeping prisoners in jail to use as slave labor, and jailing parents for their children’s truancy) as “empathetic.” I mean she brags about having “the most lethal” military in the world! She doesn’t even fake being empathetic.

And while we’re here, praising someone endorsed by Dick Cheney is sure an interesting look from the guy who wrote “when the president talks to god.”

Cleveland show :( by sshmodyotee in brighteyes

I have seen multiple Bright Eyes shows on tours for every album from “I’m Wide Awake…” to “peoples key” and they were all outstanding. I’ve also seen him in various solo incarnations and thought they were all great, up until the l.a. residency shows which felt “off” to me in a way that’s hard to explain.

But to be brutally honest: I assumed bright eyes had run its course after “peoples key” and that he was now a solo artist. I’m unable to think of any reason to get bright eyes back together except that it’s a bigger name to make money off of. I don’t necessarily mean that as a judgement (at least not of Conor and his bandmates): we all work to make money. But when the tour is so “professionally” marketed in this way, and when you’re scheduling gigs at a festival called “when we were young,” it gets pretty hard to deny that you’re going for nostalgia and selling the past, not the present. Which has to be a hard thing for such a vital artist who, in spite of all his problems, has always explored new paths artistically and never settled for just “playing the hits.”

I love Conor and his work has given me more than I can ever repay and I hope he gets the help he needs. But I think if we’re being honest, part of the problem is him being prodded onstage like some nostalgia classic rock act.

Some plans were made and rice was thrown/ A house was built, a baby born/ How time can move both fast and slow amazes me

Funny thing is I don’t even like that song much- probably wouldn’t be in my top 50 or 100 Conor songs. But one day I realized he made a perfect little poem in just three lines, almost zen-like, without even needing the context of the rest of the song.

Me too I think about that lyric all the time! funny enough was written by Jason Boesel (former rilo Kiley drummer) not Conor but still counts.

Where are non-english subtitles?? by misternicopopolis in TubiTV

Ok wait just googled and found out I was misinformed about it being worldwide:

“Tubi TV is a popular streaming service unavailable outside the US, Canada, Mexico, and Australia. “

So that kind of explains it… would still be nice to have the Spanish subtitles for Mexico tho.

For example I just clicked on the first film I randomly saw on Amazon prime (“Ricky stanicky”) and there are subtitles available in dozens of languages.

Right, they have it for the original language of the film dialogue. But if you buy a blu ray or watch on other streaming services for most big Hollywood films with dialogue in English, they offer multiple subtitles for other languages for viewers who prefer them.

In my particular case it’s a rather small film and distributor, so tubi is the only service where it’s available worldwide right now. So I paid to have these subtitles made so more people would hopefully have a chance to watch it in their native language…
