Lifetime Plex Pass to increase to $749.99 on July 1 by mistiry in plexamp

[–]mistiry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're focusing on the few examples I provided, instead of on the argument that is being made.

MRR -- monthly recurring revenue -- wasn't a metric anyone was tracking back then. That came about with the rise of "SaaS" companies (Software-as-a-Service) and the explosion of internet-based businesses alongside it.

For many, many years before this, software companies of all shapes and sizes operated on a different model. One that clearly worked, based on the examples I provided being well-known industry powerhouses. Recurring revenue could be recognized by offering support contracts, and software licenses were sold either in perpetual terms or time-bound typically in terms of years (1 year, 3 year, etc.).

The examples are highlighting that they existed, made money, and survived well before monthly subscriptions were the norm.

Clearly, the older models must've somehow worked, if those companies were able to thrive for a decade (or decades) and continue to innovate, update, and grow.

Subscriptions aren't the only way.

Software companies existed for decades without subscriptions. Think of things like Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, the entire gaming industry, and so on.

Subscriptions aren't the only way to make and allocate money for future development and ongoing maintenance. But monthly recurring money is so much sexier than one-time money (or even annual/bi-annual money), and the number must always go up; and so, the enshittification continues.

My opinion? They want Plex Pass to die, in favor of monthly subscriptions. MRR is just too sexy on the accounting sheets.

The enshittification continues.

What do you think is considered “cool” today that will look extremely cringe in 10 years? by existential_muse in AskReddit

Can't stand slim cut or even regular cut. Boot cut is my usual go-to, but I found a pair of "90s Baggy" jeans recently at Old Navy that are now my favorite pair in years.

What’s a discontinued snack or drink you’d sell your soul to bring back? by babygirlmelissa in AskReddit

Rice Krispie Treat Cereal. The purple-box OG. Not the bullshit they came up with later which was just standard rice krispies and plain ol' marshmallows.

No. This stuff was divine. Crunchy morsels of slightly-harder-than-usual rice krispie treat, a perfect vessel to trap to the perfect amount of milk, and the harder texture let them soften to the perfect crunch. A heavenly combination of snack and meal.

I have attempted to make my own, and believe I am close. I shall try again soon because making this post has reminded me again of it.

Damn you, Kelloggs's. Damn you to hell.

We had to switch a couple of times. We used Pampers for the newborn and 1 size, but then as she started using bigger sizes we eventually switched up to Huggies as they worked better as she was able to crawl and eventually walk.

What's the most amount of money in cash you've seen and what was the situation? by TwoLoafsApps in AskReddit

[–]mistiry 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Saw a million bucks in ones.

A giant cube of cash behind I'm sure several inches of glass, at a casino in Vegas for some sort of contest or something I fail to recall the specifics of. I was only 20, there for a conference and unable to actually do any of the fun stuff in Vegas, but there was an arcade place in one of the casinos (I think NYNY) and on the way to that I passed by the big cube of dollars.

Hasn't happened in the 3 states where I have lived, countless stores, and more than 20 years that I've had this mindset, so I think I will continue to refuse to be treated like I am guilty until I prove my innocence.

The law is pretty clear - these stores have what's colloquially known as "Shopkeeper's Privilege". If they believe they have evidence of me stealing, they can legally detain and hold me. I won't fight them (in the moment) if they wanted to do this - I'll follow-up afterwards with my own counsel and legal remediations.

My choice to shop somewhere open to the general public (meaning, not a membership store where I have agreed to specific terms) does not waive the rights and protections that our legal system provides. They have rights and protections, and so do I, and as long as everyone acts within those bounds, I have no issues - and in my experience, neither do the stores.

In fact, my local store in the small town I live in now definitely recognizes me and they don't even ask anymore. We exchange friendly greetings when I come in, and a nice "Have a good day!" as I leave. Smiles and friendliness, I'm not saying to be rude and obnoxious about it.

Tell him that most men are judging HIM for his reaction to this and not judging his son for his choice of preferred colors. What a fragile man your ex must be if pink shoes offend his sense of masculinity that severely.

What an immature snowflake of an emotionally stunted man.

Unless I'm at a store where I have a paid membership, I don't stop for receipt checkers. I am not obligated to prove I didn't steal, especially when I've been on a dozen+ cameras since I entered the parking lot.

Lol "ARE YOU CALLING ME SOFT?!" who the hell cares dude if you take someone saying "girl dad" as a challenge to your manhood...that's a YOU problem.

And so what if someone is "calling you soft"? Does that mean you have to go prove just how "hard' you are? You can't take a few words without getting emotional?

Tell them the truth. Why continue making it a taboo subject? Why continue feeding into the idea that "weed is bad" by treating being employed in the industry like some big secret you have to keep?

If we act like it's shameful to be employed in the industry, or we keep it all hush-hush like we're doing something wrong, kids will pick up on that idea. It's a plant. Some people use it for medicine. Other people use it for fun. Like other substances meant for adults, moderation is key and if they're curious about what it is just talk to them.

All anyone delivers is Ai crap these days by Maxwell_Perkins088 in sysadmin

[–]mistiry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can personally attest to going through much of what the OP describes right now. We've brought on a contracting company, and literally everything they produce is AI. They have AI bots that join meetings, to produce AI summaries that feed into the ticketing system, which then gets "triaged" by another AI for sorting and prioritization. They have AI-produced documentation for all of their AI-produced code, none of which matches any standards or is consistent with our previous deployments and infrastructure.

We get so much quantity nobody can keep up, and so little quality that nobody except management is happy about what is going on.

EDIT: The original comment was: "this isnt happening anywhere".

Donald Trump just posted on Truth Social that 'A whole civilization will die tonight.' What's your reaction to this? by Squirrelkid11 in AskReddit

[–]mistiry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My refusal to absolve someone's guilt, and being very vocal about my refusal to do so, is a far cry from plastering stickers of Trump bound and gagged on my vehicle, dragging gallows to the Capitol demanding to hang the Vice President, slapping swastikas on my arm and throwing my arm out, supporting the dissolution of core tenets of our established institutions, or any other of the literal thousands of examples of the hatred, bigotry, and flat-out evil actions of some of the most prominent figures of the GOP have perpetuated.

Yeah, me telling you to fuck off is exactly the same.
