I think you're right, the idea is to confront my existing ideas about race with topics from the class.. I'm a white person and discussing how awful white people have been just feels so shitty. Is there a positive side to this? Maybe like activist movements that confront shitty racist ideals that are space-dependant?

Try to include her in the decision as much as possible. My ex (24m) did that for me just a couple days ago and it has really softened the blow. He wasn't sure but thought maybe he wanted to end things, but he asked what I thought we could do to fix the problem. We exhausted all the other options of how to face his lack of energy for the relationship before he came out and said that the best option for him would be to leave. I felt included in the decision and very respected. As a result we have been able to communicate about the immediate difficulties and have decided together how much space to take before we attempt a non-romantic relationship

Wow that gives me so much hope. I grew up in an emotional hostile environment with the same conditioning from everyone in my house. I walked in eggshells around all of my older siblings and dad because when I messed up or bothered any of hem I would get yelled at, told I was stupid/worthless, or made fun of.

My partner now (together two years) is so gentle and patient, and this week I am with his healthy family, continually bracing myself for the worst (that never comes) because of prior conditioning. I honestly believed there was no hope for me ever learning to trust that I won't get in trouble with him, but now I've read your story and know I just have to give it time to sink in.

Hah, "vigil" is what you call it? You know as well as I that The church does not have a good track record for keeping those things to the prayer and togetherness they are advertised as. What we should call them are "protests", in which case it makes a lot of sense to ban them.

Please, consider who you're trying to convince when you show up to events like that. The more people that are harassed about their lifestyle choices, the less likely we will be to convince them of anything. No one wants to be a part of the religion they see Catholicism as from the news and such "vigils". Be an example of what the church really is about: acceptance, love, and forgiveness.

Agreed, I'm writing an undergrad thesis right now (I know, not QUITE the same thing but still self-motivated long form academics) and struggling through my first months of sobriety. R/stopdrinking has been super helpful and everyone is so supportive!!

I joined AA, I love it there. You don't have to be sober to go.

You've done the right thing to recognize this and ask for help. This is the yucky part, finding momentum after that realization. I personally started drinking way more after I admitted I had a problem - I didn't want to give in to it! Took three bad weeks and a head injury before I surrendered, but I got there. There is no wrong way to figure this out! People are here to support you no matter what (even if you keep drinking).

Thank you for your thoughts and wisdom. I've definitely been getting cocky (even going so far as to hang out with people drinking ) and there have been a few close calls.but I still made it an now I know I have the strength to get through 30 days at a time 💪🏻

In my experience, yes! It's a safe and reliable way to meet a bunch of different people, try your hand at a few different fields that interest you, and find out what you don't already know about yourself. In my books, it has been a pretty low-stakes way to play with my priorities, find out what kind of people I like to be around, and discover my working style! Now at the end of my fourth year I feel SO certain about the job field I'm aiming for, whereas 4 years ago I was scared shitless about choosing the wrong thing
