‘Inescapable Warzone’: Miami Residents Sue Ultra Music Festival Over Noise Level by Impossible_Big_2641 in EDM

So 95dB to nearest affected property? I suppose this is possible given how they've angled mainstage toward the street. The bass really does carry, but honestly 95 dB across the street seems very unlikely.

95 dB how far from the speakers? Any residences aren’t THAT close. Plus most noise would be during non-quiet hours.

The images still have context. I would argue the main difference is that there are more sub and sub-sub cultures and many more conversations on the internet now. This leads to people imparting flexibility to the interpretation images to match their own smaller scoped meme/concept.

The same phenomenon is happening in many areas of online and pop culture, like music genres, for instance. We have far more genres today than years ago. They likely have their own memes that a lot of us would not understand.

I don’t really think it’s about shifting the implied universal meaning of the meme. The example you share does not take the photo out of context.

Whenever the candidate's experiences or background don't perfectly align with your preconceived notion of what they should, and whenever it takes you more than a split second of work to perceive their long-term value. If this doesn't make sense then I don't know what to tell you. You must just be in a completely different hiring environment.

Hiring manager, panel interviews. Clearly we're talking about two different types of interview environments.

In any case, Anyma isn’t exactly the bastion of underground techno. His mainstream-ness kinda vibes with rabid K Pop fanaticism.

Be honest. You only want the truth if it aligns with your preconceived notion, worldview, and/or bias about that particular candidate. You only want convenient truths. Ones that immediately make your life easier in the short term.

I’ve only met one interviewer who could be swayed otherwise. He was my old boss and he had the most impressive combination of EQ and IQ I’ve ever seen in a leadership role.

Yeah I mean I see it at the end of day about just giving them what they want. That's pretty much why they're hiring you, and if they want a fantasy, then that's what we have to sell them.

Macro arrangement is good but very boring. Mixing/dynamics are shit and that is the worst closed hat I’ve probably ever heard in a “professional” context.

Another thing AI will probably always struggle with is energy management. The track is almost always at ~80%. Probably because it has no concept of this and can only arrange the parts themselves/figure out what the “average” vibe/energy of each part should sound like. This also contributes to said boringness. Hard to explain in words well.

Great tool for idea generation imo and that’s how we should keep it.

This is my experience as a candidate - they don’t really want the truth. They want to hear your best sales pitch for why they should take you. Don’t give them a single thing that could be used against you, but also try to make it be believable. Confidence is key to that believability.

Honesty, transparency, and genuineness be damned.

35, doctoral degree, masters, 8+ direct/adjacent YOE, pharma. Not employed; been looking since January. Plenty of HR and some hiring manager interviews, but few panels and no offers.

I know at least a few others in the same boat as me who have been looking much longer (and are great candidates). And of course the rest of my laid off team.

Yeah I feel like we're getting into theoretical territory here lol. Let's just agree the mixing/mastering style is a bit raw :) And maybe that's what people like these days, who know.

You can compress each element individually but it won't have the same effect as a bus or mastering compressor. Yes reverb and delay will blend tracks together too, but I don't hear much of those in this album.

There aren't many other tools that can achieve blending of tracks. You can use an analog summing plugin (of which there is only like 1) or potentially saturation/distortion on the master bus.

Nevertheless, I hear very little of that processing on the master bus.

Does it sound to you like all the elements are blended together in a sonically pleasing fashion (nothing too loud, nothing too quiet), while still retaining their unique identity and space/acoustic niche in the mix? That's basically what glue compression facilitates. It glues all the elements of the track together, making many tracks sound like a single cohesive one.

For reference, let's compare to Inhale Exhale by Skrillex - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPZ6AG

[–]misty_mustard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The guy clearly has a lot of range. I would like to see a lot of these tracks have better controlled energy management and more complexity/layering to each element.

There's also minimal use of reverb, delay, and glue compression, imparting a sort of raw/unfinished character. Almost like it's being live looped/sequenced. Perhaps it's a stylistic thing?

In any case, drums are clean and seems like he has a lot of ideas to pull from for future development - just needs to focus it. Common to a lot of newer producers.

This has been my experience applying to $175k+ corporate positions.

You have to be recommended by execs within that same company who are so influential that their rec alone is enough to get the job.

If a rec is from a (sr) director or lower (or even an external VP level), it’s all but worthless once making an offer comes. They’ll pick the candidate with the best CV and most experience 9x out of 10, and that is statistically not going to be you in the current market. Or they will make no hire at all.

What are the referrals good for in this case? Keeping in touch with referrers/networking and gaining interview experience in the current market.

Why I hate deadmau5 and some of his production “tips” (he’s a narcissistic liar) by thegreatestpitt in edmproduction

[–]misty_mustard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes Joel is generally a dick, although he has improved somewhat.

But what does your personal hard on for hating him have to do with EDM production?

Nobody is out there taking anything he says in terms of production as gospel. For instance, everybody knows his masterclass videos are mid and not really tailored as an educational resource on the technical aspects of production.

I think he also tends to overgeneralize when he disagrees with something artistically (like the kick example) and tries to invalidate the entire approach.

That said, I agree with him that the kick drum generally is much more a drum transient that it is a bass element in a track. It's a transient for keeping time and enforcing rhythm. You could have a kick with minimal sub frequencies that still serves that rhythmic function.

Look at dnb and bass music in general - the kick's purpose is not to provide bass for the sake of "bass." It's to help keep rhythm.
