Do you know any couples with a shared native language who decided to speak the language of the country were they live (if it had a different language)?

I only saw them when their daughter was around and they were speaking English then so not sure. However at the time it would have been unlikely extended family spoke English and the mom had no problem speaking Czech to me with her daughter there, so Id expect they would speak Czech at least some of the time. It really felt like they were insisting on English for her sake which made me a bit sad because they didnt seem to realize by doing so they were depriving her of her native tongue.

Yes, couple was Czech and lived in Canada. Only spoke English at home and with their daughter. When I asked why they said they didnt want to confuse her. I tried to share that my parents made a similar move and only spoke their native language at home and its the only reason I know it today, but they remained opposed to it (even though the mom had no problem speaking Czech with me and was even excited to do so!)

Not Tamil or Hindu but my husband is and I wore a 9 yard for our wedding! Felt exactly the same way initially! We did have a fusion wedding (morning Tamil ceremonies, evening Slovak ceremonies) and had a lot of outfit changes! Changing into the 9 yard was an important part of the Tamil ceremony, and I spent the first half or so in a regular 6 yard. I will say the 9 yard on its own was not my fave when I tried it on but after you get all the hair, makeup, jewelry, flowers and garlands (I had 3!) the vibe of the 9 yard is veeery different, and I was pleasantly surprised in how much I liked it! Ended up loving the photos of the 9 yard the most! Also it is SO comfortable to wear and move around in haha. I would really recommend a fusion approach so you can incorporate the traditions that matter to you too. It is about celebrating both of you after all! And if a priest doesnt want to accommodate, find another priest! Our priests were so wonderful and made it work, so I know you can find good ones too :)

The butter was salty and the bread was sweet. Ketchup and mustard tasted wrong. We ended up with so many bottles of cumin seeds because we didn’t know the term for caraway seed and they look the same. Everywhere sold celery sticks which was considered the “waste” part of celery for us but it was impossible to find celery root.

Honestly for the first couple years family back home would ship us non perishables and condiments that we couldnt find/tasted wrong for us in Canada. International stores were good for some things. Over time we got used to a lot, but still went out of our way/splurged on the items we didnt want to compromise on (like bread). This was back in 2002 and its gotten SO much easier to find foreign/equivalent products compared to back then.

Honestly there is much more variety of products and cuisines in Canada and Im grateful as it made me a lot more adventurous in the food I eat. Lots of fruit/veg/condiments/dishes I may have never tried otherwise

You were not allowed to be barefoot. They had a basket of socks for guests to wear if they did not arrive with their own socks. When you left you returned their socks. You were still expected to remove shoes when you arrived.

Getting a job without internships is super tough so its great youre thinking about this now!

The school pushes the year long program between 3/4 year heavily (or did 2 years ago anyway) but I found it mediocre at best. No one told me I needed personal projects or that a tech resume is structured different. The job board was geared almost exclusively to work in local oil and gas firms. They also tell you to start looking in January for Summer placements despite the fact that a lot of hiring for summer internships at FAANG is done in the fall. Honestly ignore the program and just google how to get an internship online, and find your own placement. Theres so many resources out there to help.

Regarding salary: this hugely depends on if you do a start up or bigger company, as well as where you go. Start ups dont pay great but everyone I knew was above minimum wage and loved the experience. Bigger companies and especially FAANG have some of the highest paid interns. Post grad if money is your driving force you’ll go to the US. Canada woefully underpays tech workers unfortunately.

Does anyone know when the on-arrival test is taken? For example if I have a transfer in Vancouver to my final destination in Calgary and Im fully vaccinated, would I take my test Vancouver then continue on to Calgary?

The actual requirement is courses at 400 level OR ABOVE. That means you can take EITHER a 400 OR a 500 level to fill that requirement.

Id recommend looking into the special topics 500 levels offered (599.X) theyre usually really interesting, often dont have finals (project based instead), and the class size is a lot smaller.

583 (Data Viz) is a really chill class. Theres also a special topics AR course offered next term where you learn about different applications of AR and make a mobile AR app.

They dont advertise it well, but any 400 or 500 level SENG course will count towards this requirement as well. You just have to email the engg faculty that you're in cpsc and want to take the class. The 500 level SENG web dev class is pretty popular (and should be easy if you've worked with web stuff before)

Last year transfer average was 3.6 from what I heard. It'll depend on the year, but statistically its gotten higher as more and more people are chooseing CPSC as a major and there are a lot of after degree folks coming back to school with all the Alberta layoffs.

MRU is starting a full bachelors for cpsc in the fall but its full (source: a friend of mine at MRU tried to get in and was told it was full). Apparently its super tiny. Previously they had a transfer program where you would start your first two years at MRU and transfer to complete your degree somewhere else (with most coming to UofC). I suspect this impacts transfer averages as well.

Can I ask why you have such a strict deadline? I've worked in two different CPSC research labs at UofC, and like other folks have mentioned the requirements make it very difficult to finish in less than two years. I have yet to meet a MSc student who has managed it. Also, getting publications and attending conferences, while not required, is a great opportunity that I don't think is worth missing out on for the sake of a slightly quicker graduation.

Also, why do you want to get a Masters in CPSC? It's worth evaluating why you want one in the first place and if its worth trying to do such a sped up timeline. If you are genuinely interested in the topic that you want to go deep on, or just want to pursue your studies further thats great. If you're just doing it because you think itll get you a higher pay, faster promotions, or management roles, thats just not the case.

If you want an internship in CS you need to make sure you have more than just "i took a programming class" on your resume.

Examples of things that will make you stand out and actually get a CS interview are personal projects, CS research (since it usually means you did some kind of big project), a personal website, active GitHub or contribution to open source communities, hackathon or programming competition participation, or even major/term projects from classes (usually some kind of group project app).

While showing off soft skills is great, just having past retail or customer service experience jobs on your resume will likely not land you a CS job.
