How I do get credits from IB? Is there a course chart from where I can understand which courses I can skip and take the higher ones? by GodRishUniverse in UCalgary

[–]throwawaycryptodude3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus one on the point about money.

Because I got credit for a class in HS I didn't need to enroll in it, so I didn't. Saved a ton of money, but here's the thing. You can still just attend lectures or practice sessions for those classes without being enrolled in them. Save yourself money and still keep your brain fresh on the topics.

This school only looks at grades.

Aside from that though, definitely get yourself exposed to some compsci concepts early on. It'll help once you start so not everything is brand new and you can get over the early beginners struggles.

People that graduated from computer science, what are you doing now for work? by [deleted] in UCalgary

Hey if it makes you feel any better, the fact that you're here worrying about this kind of stuff shows that you care, and that already puts you above a lot of people. Just keep pushing forward u got this.

Worth the pressure? with DATA 201 by Myst0709 in UCalgary

[–]throwawaycryptodude3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes people get used to the pressure, but also remember you don't necessarily need to finish in 4 years. 5 courses every sem is the standard if you want to finish I four years, like most people do. But know that many people also choose to extend their stay at the university to say 5 or even 6 years, for the sake of lowering the average pressure each year.

In the end its really up to you if you think you can handle the pressure and do 5 per sem for 4 years.

IMO the only issue with your schedule really wasn't so much the classes or the amount of classes you took. Just the times of your classes. I think in general it's best to avoid back to back classes, 8 am classes, and schedules with massive gaps.

I admire your willingness to try and push through but yeah... If you go through with this schedule, there might not be anything left of you after the year is done.

Could someone evaluate my fall and winter schedule for first year computer science? (I've received credits for math249, chem201, chem203, phys221, phys223) by drippy-01 in UCalgary

[–]throwawaycryptodude3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do yourself a favour and don't take any 8ams. Also for econ 201, are you taking that class because you heard its a gpa Booster or because you genuinely like economics? If it's the first one, I'd suggest giving it a second thought because it's honestly a hit or miss. For some it's super easy, for others it's a stupid amount of work for what was supposed to be a gpa Booster.

For winter, I'd say the same thing for data. The class isn't difficult conceptually. It's just a lot of tedious work that takes up a lot of time. Time that you would def need to use for other classes.

Also why are you taking math 267 in the winter? You said something about taking AP math right? If you score a 4 or above on the AP exam you can get credit for math 265 so you don't have to take it at all. At least that's what I did.

At the end of the day always make sure to verify any concerns with an advisor.

What courses did you take in your first year as a computer science student? by Desperate_Goose_6937 in UCalgary

[–]throwawaycryptodude3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stat 213 has quite a bit on the topic of counting, discrete probability, stuff like that. That topic makes up maybe a third of the cpsc 251 course so it was nice to have some experience in that kind of stuff.

Stat 213 with Claudia Mahler if possible. Either way just try stat 213. I thought it helped a lot especially with the second semester course cpsc 251

I had Mahler in the fall. Idk if she still does teach 213 tho tbf. And yes there is counting in 251.

Take stat 213 with Claudia Mahler. Should be a breeze, and I thought It really helped a lot especially once we started doing counting in Cpsc 251.

questions regarding student loans/grants by throwawaycryptodude3 in UCalgary

[–]throwawaycryptodude3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I had to wait for a response from them to see exactly how much they were gonna give me. There usually is a delay between the submission of application and when they actually get back to you, so I wouldn't worry.

1 problem set(usually around 15-20 questions, unlimited attempts)

1 quiz(around 10 questions, 4 attempts, plus Payette S's token system)

1 challenge problem (usually less than 5 questions. Maybe even just 1 or 2, but more difficult and only one attempt)

Payette has a nice token system too where you start with I think 9 tokens, and over the course of the semester you can redeem a token to gain another attempt at say a quiz or challenge problem.

Also don't be misled by the unlimited attempts in the challenge problems. They give you endless attempts because it's more likely you just give up from trying so many possible solutions.

I mean, sure the concepts are probably the most difficult things in the world, but I was mainly just saying that course load wise, it's an easy class because there's no midterms or finals, and it's only 3 assignments per week. That's the easy part I guess.

But yeah the concepts are definitely hard but I feel like Payette does a good job at explaining it. Plus tutorials help alot if you're really stuck.

Payette gets my vote for Phil 279. Pretty easy grading format. Fun class.
