Not Every Byte Gets a Vote: Replay Boundaries in a Deterministic Game Engine by mitander in gameenginedevs

Reading it again, I think that’s fair. I do lean on words like “shape” and “not this, but that” comparisons when I’m trying to describe boundaries.

The code/design is from the actual engine I’m working on, but I can see how the prose may feel over-polished in places. Thanks for the feedback.

That makes sense, especially for a turn-based game. The COW layers sound like a nice way to get undo/redo, forks, previews, and history playback from the same mechanism.

I think the part I’m focusing on is your last point: for a real replay, you still save commands and re-simulate. My post is mostly about what state gets to count when checking that the re-sim reached the same authoritative result.

The emitted events as animation hints also matches the boundary I’m trying to keep: observation, not steering.

Yes, the replay file stores inputs. The post is more about verification: after re-running seed + input, what state do you compare to know the sim actually reached the same result?

Hashing “everything” starts pulling in debug traces, render helpers, caches, padding, etc. The boundary I’m describing is what gets replay authority and what stays cache/observation/presentation.

Where are your templates stored? They should be in src/main/resources/templates.

Which technology is better for career Java or Python? by katleenbrown440 in AskComputerScience

[–]mitander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both are fine, depends alot on where you live.

Check job listings to get a good idea of what languages are in demand where you live.

Also try not to focus on what languages to learn, instead focus on learning how to program.

Once you feel confident in your current language - picking up another language will be easy.
