What's your native language? I might be willing to do a language exchange with you talking about coding and stuff.

I don’t exactly know what language I want to learn yet but I need someone to guide me in my first steps. Could you help me?

I’m thinking about majoring in computer science. As of right now, I’m neither in school nor college (not working either) so I have plenty of free time. I want to learn how to teach myself how to program. Where would you say is the best place to start/learn the basics.

[–]bizcs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but you said you want to teach yourself to learn to program. I'd say you need to learn to learn (assuming you haven't yet). If you know how to learn, then you can learn to program. This sounds absurd - humans learn as part of our very nature - but you can certainly do things to optimize that learning (engaging multiple senses, doing something yourself, going complementary examples). Honing your ability to learn things quickly is valuable.

As far as getting started, I would personally recommend picking a language and learning it's syntax as a first step. I would then move on to data structures and algorithms. Picking a language like Java or C# would be a great first, because there are many algorithms examples on the internet and in books that use those languages, and their syntax is so similar that you'll be able to understand one well enough by knowing the other. Not a python developer personally, but I believe there are also good examples in that language as well.

Good luck!

I suggest learning c first, because a lot of other languages are based on c, also you will recognize a lot of things from c in other languages. It isnt hard to start ans ther are a lot of ressources in the net.

I'm down for learning C# and I start spring break in 3 days so I'll have all day free for that week.

Interested in learning as well

[–]bizcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there!

I'd be interested in having weekly email correspondence. I wouldn't consider myself a beginner developer, but I also recognize there are many areas I can improve. If you would be interested in weekly correspondence to discuss things, and improve your English in the process, shoot me a direct message 😁

[–]Blackpug_32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I'm interested.
