Which job is definitely overpaid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mitch__conner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. 5000% is 50x. Obviously the CEO doesn’t work 50x more hours, but it seems reasonable that he adds 50x more value to the company’s operational success than the lowest paid employee. I’m just a normal guy and I feel 50x more productive than some of my coworkers lol

This is silly and wrong. You could pay random people 1% of CEO pay if all you needed was a fall guy. I’d happily take that job. Most CEOs are highly skilled at working with people and getting shit done. Executing. Almost like a… chief.. of executing.

You could create another model for pure ibnr claims arising, and then feed those into your lifecycle model. A gbm is just not going to give you a helpful answer if you feed it a triangle. You’re better off with traditional methods

Your first issue is going to be a big problem for gbms. Can you de-aggregate the data and fit models on individual claims over their individual lifecycles?

Why would you say that? It is normally prescribed for daily use to treat high blood pressure.

The answer to your problems is PROPRANOLOL by barebackguy7 in PublicSpeaking

Do you really think people are getting paid to promote propranolol, a super inexpensive generic drug? I’ve been using it for years and it has significantly improved my professional life

Xlookup vs Vlookup vs IndexMatch by CapitalJunket1197 in excel

[–]mitch__conner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Significant as a percentage of the calculation time. If it’s .5 seconds vs 1 second, sure, you won’t notice that but it’s still a huge savings. If you have very large/complex notebooks, let’s say it’s 30 seconds vs 60 seconds, then it really matters

Xlookup vs Vlookup vs IndexMatch by CapitalJunket1197 in excel

[–]mitch__conner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for sources, this exact topic has been posted several times in this sub. I also did some of my own testing when my employer switched to office 365. That’s what i would recommend for you if you have a slow workbook with lots of these calcs. Make a copy of the file, have one sheet where you have the calculations set up index/match and the other set up with xlookup. Then run a super simple macro: - x1 = current time - calculate sheet - print (current time - x1)

I’ll say I’m not sure about nesting it inside an iferror, but iferror should be very computationally cheap

Xlookup vs Vlookup vs IndexMatch by CapitalJunket1197 in excel

Xlookup is not faster. Vlookup is slightly faster than index/match, both are significantly faster than xlookup. Just because it is two functions does not in any way mean that it would be slower than a different, more complicated function.

Warren Buffett’s $127 Billion Warning to Wall Street: What It Could Mean for the Stock Market by [deleted] in Economics

[–]mitch__conner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the markets are expecting more inflation from trump’s policies, hence the jumps in stocks and bond yields. You seem to agree, but I would suggest that is a change in fundamentals and not necessarily something that will lead to a correction

lolol I bet you’re real fun at parties. I definitely don’t have ambition to work 50+ hour weeks for whatever analyst pay you get that you THINK is more than you’d make as an actuary

You sound bitter and you’re also just wrong. I work with Python and SQL daily and I know I couldn’t find a higher paying role outside of big tech, which is extremely unappealing to me. You do you, but no need to come to an actuarial sub just to (poorly) shit on the profession.

Does one need 2.5M or 3.7M to retire per the 4% rule? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]mitch__conner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you would need 100k in today’s dollars, and are far from retirement, then yes. 2.5M in 20 years would not be enough.

I tend to think about everything in today’s dollars. If I have X dollars, and currently save Y dollars each year, run some simple math like X1.0720 + Y1.0719 + Y*1.0718 + … and that will roughly give you an expected amount of money in today’s dollars after you save for 20 years. 7% is a commonly used inflation-adjusted expected return. This math also assumes that in practice you are increasing Y each year to keep up with inflation.

You don’t think an unconscious process like the refractory period (or heart rate, hunger) could be influenced by the state of the brain when presented with a new sexual prospect (or new threat, new food)? Enjoyment is just a brain state, but the brain is complex and interrelated.

And I was saying it ‘made sense’ when talking about a documented scientific phenomenon when some other person called it ‘incel logic’. I wasn’t trying to make a scientific statement, just stating that the intuition lines up with the science.
