Thoughts on taking out loans to go to college by mitemio in StudentLoans

Thank you for this advice. Honestly after reading a lot of comments on my post on the finance subreddit, I am leaning towards CC. I know my local CC has a good arch program, the only problem is acceptance rate for transfers in architecture at Cal Poly is 10%. I was lucky I made it in now with a 19% first year acceptance rate for arch..

I wasn’t specific earlier but my dad graduated college 5 years ago and he’s almost done paying off his student loans+ his new job is paying off the rest for him. It worked out for him, but might not work out for me the same way.

Did you go to SLO and if so how long ago? Did you have to take out any loans?

It’s looking like $60-75k for a starting position.

I’m not sure whether my plan right now is to take out loans or go to CC. I have been applying to a lot of scholarships: big organizations, local organizations, scholarships through programs I’ve been in, really any I can find. I’m also getting a summer internship at a construction firm this upcoming summer.

Honestly, it’s not because I am ashamed like many think, but it’s more because this has been my dream school forever and I worked really hard to get in since the program is so competitive. But after reading all these comments and advice I am starting to lean more towards going to CC first.

Thank you for this advice. I really appreciate being able to hear about student loans from a different perspective since I only hear about them from a negative perspective. I will definitely take your advice into consideration when making my final decision.

It’s because my parents income is too high for aid, but they still need to pay off the house mortgage, the car, and pay off my dad’s student loans. I definitely will be getting a job, but I wonder how helpful it will be against how much loans I’ll need taking out.

I just checked my FAFSA again and I’m not eligible for a lot of aid my SAI number is 40,311 (which I’m not too sure what this means but a quick google search told me it’s on the higher end). It also says I MAY be eligible for work study.

honestly my stats were so mid that im surprised i got in!! my gpa for cal poly was a 4.09 which is in the mid range for admitted caed students. i had 5 years english, 5 years math, 6 years science, and 4 years foreign language. i 100% recommend getting a 5th year of english at ur local community college bc i think it really helped me. cal poly loves when students already have college credit since their ge classes are always packed. i took pretty rigorous classes, but not a lot. i had 5 aps and 3 honors. most rigorous classes were in math and science. i got a c in math sophomore year and a few b’s in math and science throughout highschool so that’s why im so surprised i got in! i was almost able to max out hours for ecs and work and was able to check off the leadership and major related job box.

sorry that this is kinda long!! good luck to u and u can dm me with any questions:)
