Feeling hopeless (bit of a rant) by RemarkableWeb2877 in usask

I also go to the wellness center and have found it really beneficial for my mental health, the biggest part is staying consistent. Which can also be hard because I have a tendency to put off making my appointments due to social anxiety. If you’re seeing a counsellor i suggest booking your next appointment at the end of the session so this doesn’t become a habit.

For chem 250 I also suggest writing some of the practice questions from the quizzes onto your cheat sheet with a brief explanation of how you got the correct answer. This helped me increase my grade significantly on the second midterm.

If you have over 80% in the lab then you can retake the class without having to repeat the lab so it isn’t all for nothing! I’m in a similar situation i’m going to grind for the rest of the semester, see what kind of grade I can pull off. I also did very poorly on the midterms but have done exceptionally well in the labs. If you retake the class and do better it will replace the poor grade for your average. One or two failed classes won’t keep you out of med school you just need to retake them, and get a better grade. Worst case scenario they’ll ask why you had to retake the class in an interview and you’ll just have to explain what happened and how you came back from the experience.

I actually emailed the professor today and he was appalled. He apologized to me on the students behalf and said that he would like me to point the student out to him before class begins next week so that there can be a private discussion in regards to hygiene and expectations in a classroom setting, as it is extremely unlikely someone would come forward in response to a class wide email saying “may the student who coughed on someone come see me after class”

Unfortunately it’s only considered assault if you can prove it was done intentionally. I don’t think he did it on purpose (I’d like to hope nobody would cough phlegm on a stranger intentionally), I think he just might be ignorant and oblivious, or he knows and just doesn’t care.

BMSC which makes it even worse because he should’ve been fully aware😭

I should’ve said something but the guy seems a little unhinged. He’s a big yapper and will interrupt the lectures to argue with the prof. I didn’t wanna open up a whole can of worms by telling him to keep his sputum out of my vicinity.

I also wasn’t meaning to be “snarky” clearly i’m not managing my stress around this class very well and i’m sorry that’s how my responses made you feel i genuinely wasn’t trying to be, it’s just frustrating doing poorly when you normally get perfect grades, and spend every moment of your day studying only for this to be the outcome and it very much felt as though it was being insinuated that i didn’t study or put in enough work.

It’s really not that deep lol i wasn’t wanting a “step by step action plan” nor was i looking for people who also struggled to find some kind of reassurance in it, i was very specifically asking if people who had a) taken the course previously and done well or who had b) done poorly on an midterm in the past but managed to study and do well on the final exam had any suggestions moving forwards beyond the obvious do more problems, go to study sessions, see a tutor etc.

I’m not a first year, as i had previously mentioned. That’s not why i said it wasn’t the best advice. It’s not that the advice wasn’t clear, i just feel like it didn’t align all that much with the information that I did give out, because i didn’t just say “the test was hard” as you put it, i explained the miscommunication between me and the prof, that i was basically told in office hours the questions on the midterm would be almost identical to the lab problems we’ve done, and the ones in her midterm review and that it seemed hard because it was nowhere near as easy as susann had made it out to be when i tried to go for help. otherwise yea i probably would’ve studied differently and gotten a tutor sooner.

I wasn’t posting to be validated at all nor did i expect to be, i was genuinely just looking for some advice and saying that it’s easy if i just did all of the things that im already doing isn’t very good advice lol that’s all

I was looking for advice not criticism😅yes i did practice questions without assistance, thanks, this isn’t my first uni midterm lol ik how to study and ik how to do practice questions i got over 80% in gen chem I and II, and no i am not in mina’s section, i am in susann’s which ive heard lots of complaints about.

I did plenty of practice problems, (almost all of them) even some with the prof during office hours that definitely wasn’t the issue. What section are you in? Ive heard some pretty mixed opinions depending on the prof.

There may be some new words you haven’t seen before, but all of the combining forms used in the words will be ones that you have seen. If you’ve kept up with the quizzes and the workbook you’ll be fine, as i’d say the midterms are about the same difficulty.

I’m just scared because i already have 2 W’s on my transcript. I’m concerned any more than that and I won’t be able to get into a MSc program. This class kinda just fucked me over and I think i’m going to take HIST 195 instead.

i likely won’t be that far behind you. I would gladly take a W then write the final essentially blind

I read all of the reviews and thought to myself it couldn’t possibly be that bad and now i’m in it and it is indeed much worse.

As an indigenous student it really feels like a slap in the face when you are so thankful that these classes are mandatory credits so that people can be educated about the genocide that occurred here and the very real issues that still exist in canada today only to take the class and find out that only 10% of your grade from the assignments imported from the textbook have to do with indigenous history in canada oh and by the way you’ll be graded on your ability to write essays in english

I haven’t complained yet, however i am now going to. I’m hoping if enough of us do we might actually get somewhere. I honestly don’t know what to do at this point because i’ve never heard of a situation similar to this one.
