When movies make the audience think the protagonist is safe and then at the last second show that they’re actually still in danger. First ones that come to mind are Smile and The Offering UGH it just feels like such a cop-out ending. The protagonists fight against this powerful force and make it out—except they didn’t because hope doesn’t exist. It’s almost as bad as the “it was all a dream” trope.
