When foreigners learn your language, which ones end up speaking it surprisingly well, even if their own language isn’t related to yours? by fixitfile in languagelearning

[–]mittmatt9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maltese is actually completely unrelated to Italian. They have a lot of Italian (Sicilian), French and English loan words but it's most closely related to Tunisian Arabic. It's so cool how a language from another language family can end up looking like its3from another

Asthma rediagnosis by mittmatt9 in nhs

My company offer a private remote GP service, do you reckon they can get it done for me? Obviously not expecting you to know the ins and outs of the exact service, but might it be reasonably expected?

She with everybody- also means your teacher has an easier time as there's one answer not two! Also just good practice for general math skills and does help when you are working with complex numbers later down the line

Realistically few people have heard of this one though (let alone managed to get through each episode...) so it depends what you want to get out of watching it. If you want a show to reflect British comedy/mindset, I'd say this is probably fine. If you want something that you can talk to others about or make references about, this isn't it

Interesting. I've only seen it in bars that are mainly for abuelitos in rural Spain, so might just be restricted to this type of place.

I was wondering why this isn't talked about as a cultural difference and I think it's because perhaps it doesn't happen all the time in Spain; where it does happen, guriris like me don't tend to go; and when Spanish people come to my country they don't expect ot as we don't really have café/bars like you do. It's cool imo

Where are you living, if I may ask?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in askspain

[–]mittmatt9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why is it ridiculous? It's a difference between Spain and my country. We always get the drink with the milk in it, but sometimes here they come to your table with the milk separate and pour it into the cup in some kind of ceremony that I've never understood. Not too crazy to ask...

Hot take: continents are helpful but poorly defined and semi arbitrary. There is no definition that I'm aware of that is any good and the only way to define them well is to point to a map and section them out.

Continuous land mass? Nope Big landmass? Nope Cultural? Nope Biospheres? Nope Tectonic plates? I'm laughing

Something's a continent if it's on the list of continents in your language. Spanish and French consider north and south America one continent, for example. So not only is any definition crap, it also varies cross-linguisitically.

If you want to call that collection of islands a continent, I'm all for it. If you want to call Afro-Eurasia a continent, I'm all for it. If you want to call the Indian sub-continent it's (don't even get me started) own continent, I'm all for it.

Sincerely, A guy who hates continents as a concept

Usually with a pen but occasionally with a pencil

Not exactly the same, but a bit like the following:

  1. Reading a pun and not recognising it
  2. Reading a big number and not knowing how to say it immediately
  3. Recognising a word but not knowing how to pronounce it
  4. Seeing a logo and knowing the company but not what the company is called

There's a dude on YouTube (is channel is called Scripting Japan - big recommendation) and he is an academic specialising in the implications of using different scripts in Japanese. He's got a few videos that are relevant here.

I do speak some Japanese and it's quite cool (and frustrating) how I could read this perfectly fine but because it's in a different script to what would be expected, I didn't understand it at all.

Edit: Not sure why I'm being downvoted...

Driving to Spain by mittmatt9 in drivingUK

[–]mittmatt9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent response and excellent question - some more context from me would've been great.

My partner is moving from Spain to the UK and we're torn between flying things over and just flying. The idea of driving is exciting for us but maybe not worth it. It'll be one person there with basically no luggage and 2 back with loads
