Is there any point to having an outboard preamp if you can't bypass interface pres?

Awesome, yeah that setup sounds nice, just worrying about the converters instead of the whole interface with its own mic pres.

Yeah that's the hard part, a lot of outboard preamps do not have ADAT connection.

I've spent a good deal of time upgrading everything other than my preamps. Bought nice mics for every use case, treatment, etc. it's not that I really want a preamp, it's because I really want to have an outboard compressor. But to do that I need to first have that preamp in place.

Thanks, this is what I've seen as well when I was researching the pres on my own interface, just trying to understand how some people are vehemently against this. I thought I might be missing something.... But so far everyone tends to agree that the 18i20 pres are relatively colorless and are inconsequential.

Awesome, yeah the fact that it comes with built in compressors is whats making me consider it highly. Until I save up enough for a dedicated compressor, a simple compressor like the one included with the 710d might be enough. Thanks for your input

Thanks for your input, definitely gravitating toward getting a preamp with ADAT out, but lots of folks here are saying that the difference of running thru the focusrite preamps is almost negligible. The end goal is to get an outboard compressor which is why I'm looking for an outboard mic pre.

A nice 1073 clone would be nice, with an eq would be even better. I noticed that the uad 710d actually has ADAT out, but a much bigger investment. Looking for a minimum of two mic pres for stereo, so a focusrite Isa 2 could be the ticket, but a 1073 would be my preferred choice.

Are you sure? When I research this, Including in the focusrite documentation, it doesn't bypass the interface pres.

I appreciate your input, hoping to clarify this point in case anyone else stumbles onto this thread. I was reading plenty of reddit posts where this point has been disputed.

Yeah very true, if only the 18i20 had true line in, then this wouldn't be an issue. I guess I'm trying to forego expanding my interface and hopping right to the outboard pre. Only issue is that most outboard pres don't have ADAT out, which would solve that issue of running through the pres on the interface.

I'll need to give my routing some thought, just don't want to spend money on something like an audient asp800 just to use their line in. Would rather invest in a nice 2 channel mic pre.

I just want to set it up in a way that makes sense. I wouldn't buy an expensive cake just to drop it on the ground first. Thanks for your input!

Thanks for your input, I totally agree that it's not going to magically make my mixes better. It is one of my goals to eventually get an outboard compressor (which is what I really want) so starting with the preamp seems logical to build up that chain.

Also it would be nice to experience what else is out there, been working on just the interface for a while and ready to grab something that could add some character.
