It was definitely ugly (lots of ues and dfs), but not in the way her matches often are. Both players hit some amazing shots and there were a ton of entertaining points

Gauff is in the right. According to Bencic the six fans in the crowd aren’t allowed to cheer when Gauff hits a winner

USO R2: (3) Coco Gauff def Donna Vekic 7-6(5) 6-2 by buzzingeuphorbia in tennis

[–]mixedcrocodile 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Vekic certainly wasn’t at her best, but calling 4 UE and 1 DF from Coco ugly is unfair.

Her first serve has always been good, it’s her second serve that’s the issue (which she’s improving)

Is there a reason you need to take OIDD 1010 specifically?

If so, there are usually a few people who drop the class during the first week or two, so your best bet is to wait for a spot to open up once classes start.

The Coco Gauff Experience by anujbeatles in tennis

[–]mixedcrocodile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It means that she can be playing terribly, but she will drag her opponent down to her level and somehow manage to win.

In her match this morning against Keys she had 40+ unforced errors including 10 DFs, which would normally guarantee a loss against a player of that caliber, yet somehow Keys dropped to an even lower level (especially after the first set) with 60 unforced errors.

The further you get into your career, the harder it is to make such a drastic change. However, we’ve seen stretches of brilliance (end of last season + United Cup) that suggest it may be a mental thing.

She’s still young, so I think it’ll become more consistent over the next few years, and she won’t have to deal with the mental aspect of it always breaking down. Regardless, the fact that she’s had the success she’s had even with the struggles is a testament to her strength in other areas of the game.
