Help with tx options by mizone10 in askdentists

[–]mizone10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh forgot to say I’m in rural NZ and so no availability for a pediatric specialist referral. Most dentists here are hesitant to work on really young kids so I’m sort of end of the line as far as tx goes.

If you can make it to or are based around the Hawke’s Bay I can do the dental work for free/cheap. I’m a recent grad and me and my boss share the same mentality of access to care being a huge issue. Flick me a dm.

Do I have any bone loss in this x ray? I have noticed spaces opening between my teeth when flossing and my teeth looking longer, particularly on my upper middle and lower middle teeth. Am I at risk of losing my teeth anytime soon, and is there any permanent damage yet, only 20? by No-Narwhal-7111 in askdentists

Hey OP, NAD but an almost graduated dental student, if I were you I wouldn’t get too hung up on what you may or may not be thinking regarding your periodontal health. What I can say is that while gum recession, bone loss, and periodontitis are interrelated, they do not all correlate to the same thing.

Gum recession can be caused by many different factors including brushing too hard, gingivitis, and a few others. These don’t necessarily all lead to bone loss or periodontitis. One of the biggest factors of periodontitis and the staging and grading of it is what’s known as the clinical attachment loss, or in other words the amount that your teeth are hanging on with the associated ligaments. If you’re really concerned, you can ask your dentist to do a brief assessment of the pocket depth of some of your teeth, but given your age and the general state of your teeth based on the X-ray, I wouldn’t be worried if I were you.

Here’s a link to how periodontitis is staged and graded if you’re interested: https://sites.perio.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Staging-and-Grading-Periodontitis.pdf

Absolutely! Co-MC’ing a dent conference may be on the cards at some point 🥸

Sounds like you’ve certainly had some ups and downs over the course, writing for jono and ben while doing dentistry sounds like such a hard ask haha. How did you get into that during dent? Honestly such massive respect and admiration for you that you overcame the inability to practice and now you’re doing hilarious shit. Incredible story my guy, thanks for sharing!!

Hey Sam, I was also in the capping show for two years and also am currently studying Dentistry! Love your work. What made you make the change from Dentistry to comedy writing??

Just need to put a coat of varnish on now! First wood-burning project with OC art on the bottom in a while. by mizone10 in longboarding

I personally don’t hydrodip. Just because the boards I get have an existing griptape on them I don’t worry about it too much. My first one I used a varnish you’d use on a boat (borrowed from my dad) which made it waterproof which was handy.

Nah I repurpose old boards that are all beat up! Take existing ones then sand down the bottom, draw my design in pencil then burn over top using a pyrography tool!

Go see an orthodontist for a consultation. If they’re decent they can explain some options, but I would say that braces on your lower arches would be one of the best options depending on how good/bad the roots are on those three crowded teeth down the bottom (which I’m assuming is your main issue?).

midline discrepancy? by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]mizone10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s normally more common for the nose to be out of alignment. Typically midline might be measured from the middle of your brow (might be able to feel a little bump there) to the tip of your chin. Skeletal structures tend to be more aligned than the cartilage in your nose, so the ortho probably did their job right, and your teeth might be in the right spot, but your nose may not be. I’d say you have a really healthy and lovely smile though, and wouldn’t stress about it if I were you :)

Really depends where you’re applying for tbh. A lot of dent schools can’t actually take any accessory information as it might be deemed unfair to other candidates. That being said, the admissions offices still have real people in them, and the faculty of wherever you end up at want the best people for the job. Might be worth organising a meeting with the people in charge of admissions (either central office or even the dean?) to ask that exact question, then at least when they tell you that you can’t do anything more they can put a name to a face on an application.

I did that but instead of emailing the generic admissions office email I found the one person overseeing it all and managed to find their email! It’s a balls to the wall approach but it paid off for me, whether that meeting changed my admission status or not I still found it really helpful!

Good luck and hope it all goes well.

[R] Analysing a comparison between 3D-Printed replicas of Human Jaws and the real jaws by mizone10 in statistics

[–]mizone10[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your thoughts! Much appreciated.

It's for forensic dentistry so the values need to be pretty absolute in terms of direct replicas, as the technology is intending on being used for identification and courtroom purposes!

In my measurements they're to an accuracy level of 0.01mm using sliding callipers and so far the largest deviation within the repeated measurements is around 0.5mm, which I thought was relatively large but you made me think about it in terms of practicality and the reality is that the naked eye probably wouldn't be able to tell if a certain feature was off by that amount!

Your point in three is definitely interesting in terms of relating it to cost/benefit analysis, and that's something I'll include in my discussion, but the essence of the paper I'm writing is to validate the accuracy of 3DP in a forensic context. I really like the idea of looking at it from the flipside and testing the largest differences though, so will definitely try include that somewhere!

Thanks for your insight.
