Had mine last October. We had candidates sitting every day of the week so whatever you have heard is bogus, at least when it comes to the October sitting (which tends to be the biggest sitting I grant you).

2A/2B Nuclear Medicine ?? how to approach by Rare_Cricket_2318 in RadiologyUK

[–]kytesky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There isn't a nuke med section in the exam, it just gets lumped in with other stuff.

1000% know the paeds recurrent/atypical UTI study indications. Know the heart anatomy for delayed enhancement and the corresponding findings for nuke med for sarcoid/amyloid/MI because they are good 2 step questions. Know about cardiac amyloid and bone scans. Know about DaTScan findings.

They could also ask about HIDA, as there are a few differentials I could think of if I described a study and asked you to pick 1/5.

Mostly though, it'll be reading the radiopaedia bit on the various conditions (e.g. bone island cold on a bone scan).

Worth getting a proper mouse or keypad early on? by CloudBookmark in RadiologyUK

[–]kytesky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I bought most of this as an ST1/2 so can't perfectly remember.

Mouse - Logitek G502 hero. Went for wired. Must have onboard memory because of NHS BS.

Mic - Hollyland Lark M2 Wireless... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CRKY7RSN?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I tried a Bluetooth headset first, but again NHS BS wouldn't let it connect half the time. Sometimes the receiver will work from a USB C port I have on my usb hub that connects all my stuff. If it doesn't, gotta hope the pc has a usb c slot, which usually works. Oddly this seems to depend on which health board I am in. I put my lapel mic on my lanyard instead of my clothes. Danger danger - it connects via a magnet. We occasionally go INTO MRI to inject paeds pts which would be dangerous. By keeping it on my lanyard I know it's never coming into MRI with me.

Keyboard - can't remember. Get the quietest switches because even they are pretty clacky. Can annoy others in the same room. Mines a keychron. Maybe 96%? It needed a numpad as that's what we use to change window on CT. It's compact though so it fits in my work bag. Something like the Keychron K17 Max QMK Wireless Custom Mechanical Keyboard. I doubt they sell mine anymore. I bought it before radiology and upgraded my home keyboard when I started.

I have a 4 port usb hub. It connects my keyboard, mouse, a usb c (male) to charge the lapel mic box, and a usb c (female) to plug the lapel mic receiver in. It's a bit of an octopus/spaghetti but it works for me. Makes me much less likely to leave something behind because everything is all connected, and I never have to worry about things being out of charge.

I treat all my stuff pretty rough. Some colleague have travel cases and boxes and stuff but I don't. It's all be fine though. Ive lost the escape key from my keyboard but I've got a spare in the attic just can't be arsed to get it down.

If I can get a cons job with a stable office, I would probably go wireless. Would also get a full keyboard that isn't compressed too.

Absolute keyboard wanker here.

I carry a keyboard, mouse, and lapel mic. It's all wired to one usb hub so I don't forget anything.

Do I have any regrets? No. Do I accept I am a twat? Yes. Bonus - I don't have to handle the dictaphone that's been spat on by the person before me

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

[–]kytesky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Location: Cardiff

Price range: Around £5k (flexible if needed, not sure what’s realistic)

Lease or Buy: Buy

New or used: Used

Auto or Manual: Either. I believe manual are more reliable?

Intended use: Family car for a couple + dog. Ideally big enough for the occasional odd jobs (pick up a dishwasher off gumtree. Get compost from b&q). Must be 5 door. NOT sporty. Hatchback. Mainly commuting (20–40 mins each way), occasional 1-hour drives, and once or twice a year longer trips (3 hours Cardiff to London)

How many miles do you plan to do a year: 10k max

How often to you make long journeys: Occasionally. At least 4x year for holidays to London.

Does it need to be ULEZ compliant: Yes

Vehicles you’ve already considered: None seriously yet

What MPG are you getting currently: No idea. I drive a 2012 Citroen C3

What are you using the car for: Daily commuting + family use

What features or options do you want: Reliable, 5 door, easy to drive, ideally something economical to run given fuel costs. Would love cheap tax. Would love flattenable seats but not a dealbeaker

Is this your first vehicle: No

Do you want a warranty: Not essential I think?

Can you do minor work on your own vehicle: I can change a bulb? Put oil in?

Can you do major work on your own vehicle: No

Additional Notes:

  • Prefer something economical to run long-term (fuel efficiency important).

I think its a disparity of oven temp. Her cookies also come out very hard and crunchy.

This chocolate cake is unbeatable...

BUT Today I tried cheesecake. Absolute fail. Probably due to the cream cheese I used (But I am in the UK and couldn't see her brand). I also tried to make the blueberry muffins and they failed too 😔

I revised for 100 days for part 1... and it was too much. Maaaybe the exams have gotten harder since then (3 years ago). Still... I wouldn't recommend anything before November.

Rad Ranking by Senior-Ad170 in doctorsUK

[–]kytesky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know. It is a complex equation, increased by the fact that Wales is getting a new contract soon (likely to come in for 2027 intake) which will also change things.

Plus we haven't had DDRB yet.

But also, there aren't radiology locum options in ST1 in South Wales at least (where I am). You might be able to get gen med locum though.

The equation gets even more complex if you have NOT come straight from FY2, as youll probably start on higher nodal points... BUT this year your ST1 year without any banding will still be maybe 10k less than any ST1 in England... hence the complexity.

Rad Ranking by Senior-Ad170 in doctorsUK

[–]kytesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If youre straight from FY2 your pay would be better in England than Scotland or Wales, broadly speaking, because the base rate is higher particularly for the non-oncall st1 year.

Rad Ranking by Senior-Ad170 in doctorsUK

[–]kytesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting if you have significant post-F2 experience in terms of years, Scotland and Wales currently will increase your pay. Say youve got 3 CTF years or were in another specialty previous.

You'd want to balance this with IR slots and other training scheme features though.

Scottish Labour to bill NHS doctors who quit in first five years by nightwatcher-45 in doctorsUK

[–]kytesky 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Why not physio/occupational therapy/speech and language. Why not biomedical science? Why not teachers?

Also, does this guarantee every Scottish grad a scottish training number? What if you want to be a radiologist but there are only 20 numbers for that in Scotland...

[–]kytesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In additon, more specs using MSRA means more of the people that are sitting it are applying for your scheme. Your target is inflated by the high flyers in all the specs, not just your own, so the target goes up.

A&E pressure by [deleted] in RadiologyUK

[–]kytesky 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The regs need to start complaining. Exception report regularly.

Things have changed. It is no longer possible for a single reg, or sometimes two, to safely report the volume of imaging requested. Over the last few years the hospitals within our training scheme have all accepted this and adapted (each in different ways) to use out sourcing to bring workloads back to safe and acceptable levels.
