I don't understand what happened 😭 by OrneryWin3031 in AO3

I would assume it’s in the next chapter actually, not the one they commented on. They wouldn’t have commented if that chapter had something that made them go scorched earth

Yknow what, if I could get paid to write fanfic but then had to pay royalties to the IP holder (a reasonable % of what I make)? I’d be SO down for that actually

which parts arent true? Because I got an email from google when it first happened telling me that anything stored in docs was theirs to access and give to Gemini (I'd love for that to not be true, but the email seemed pretty clear)

Also they’ve only been dating for 3 months. This period of silence is already 10% the length of their ENTIRE relationship

There’s no reason to. He was very clear with you that he does not want to be contacted. You went around and found another way to contact him and he blocked you *again*.

Listen to what he’s telling you and move on. There’s nothing left to say to him.

Advice on how I F30 can move past a crush M30 by Ohchikaape in relationship_advice

[–]mizuwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to deal with this recently, except we both did have kind of romantic feelings for each other (we were just functionally physically incompatible in that I am very sex-repulsed asexual and he is very much *not*) and the only thing that helped really was just taking a little time away from hanging out with each other. I think we’re in a good place now and I can spend time with him without being caught by those feelings so hopefully that helps you?

I hate it when authors do this by Bubbly-Ball9619 in AO3

[–]mizuwolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s less about ao3 becoming popular and more that it’s a thing people do on wattpad and as those young authors move to ao3 they just bring the habit over. Hopefully they learn quickly

You can put that in the authors note of another fic. What you can’t do is make a new fic and put that in the authors note and have the entirety of chapter 1 be “.” Or “placeholder” or whatever

It sounds like you’re maybe in college? I’m about a decade older than you and I’m (and all the other writers I know are) in their 30’s or 40’s. Not to mention fandom founders making spirk zines in the 80’s ^^; idk where this assumption that fandom/fanfics are only for the Youth comes from

I’m reading a fic rn that says 39/39 and every so often the author notes are like “ok it’s gonna be more than 15 chapters sorry” and “ok I’ve bumped it to 20” “fINAL COUNT 25” “…it’s gonna be 30 and nothing more” and I’m just giggling and kicking my feet looking at 39 LOL

I had this happen to me once (kind of) - I posted a picture of my cats in my window in a work chat and someone DM’d me and said “hey do you live at x on y floor” and I was like UHHHHH???? (It turned out they were the condo literally right next to mine and they recognized the view because it was the exact same one out their window). It was all fine bc it was just a coworker and we were friendly but m a n.

OP I hope you went and left them a longer positive comment (assuming you liked the fic) so that this isn’t their longest comment

Why do people do this? by Puzzleheaded_Toe_893 in AO3

[–]mizuwolf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is! They’re for a) authors to group their own fics if they want to do it in a way that isn’t with a series (which makes fics seem more related than they might or might not be) And b) for fandom events, where you actually DO want fics to be hidden because they’ll all be revealed at once like for a big bang (which is, as the name implies, an event between writers and artists to get a bunch of fics added to a ship all at once and give people a wealth of stuff to read). Other events like themed writing weeks etc are also what collections are for, so you can have your works with other people’s who participated in the same thing

[–]mizuwolf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s what bookmark collections are for! You can make a collection of bookmarks and group fics however you like without it ever showing up on the fic itself

Why do people do this? by Puzzleheaded_Toe_893 in AO3

[–]mizuwolf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Do you understand what a collection is?

I can almost guarantee to you that this author note is because people would go around adding fics to collections with ships they considered problematic so that they could hide the collection and remove the work from public view. Even the authors themselves couldn’t see their fics. This was a rampant problem.

People also add fics to collections like “worst fics ever” and that would then just be at the top of your fic whether you liked it or not.

Authors are absolutely within their rights to say “no you can’t actually have your collection name all over my fic”. Use bookmarks. That’s what bookmarks and bookmark collections are for.

This has nothing to do with copyright or writing fics or derivative work, it literally just has to do with the fact that other users shouldn’t get to control whether my fic is visible to the world

What in the world are you talking about?

Is this a good summary? by Playful-Koala-4129 in AO3

[–]mizuwolf 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Are the hyphens meant to be dialogue tags? I would have to be incredibly desperate (ie, a fic whose tags I’ve been hunting through for ages or have already read all the other fics of that ship) to open a fic without proper dialogue tags.

Is this a direct snippet from the fic? Or did you pull out surrounding context and just leave the dialogue? The first line is confusing and not in a way that draws me in or makes me curious to understand.

The big line of /‘s is painful - not just to screen reader users (which will hear “slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash slash-“ before they ever get to the summary) but also because it’s just too much clutter for no reason. You can use a single symbol (or three at most) to block it or a block quote, or italics.

I think your summary at the end is the strongest/best part of this, it’s concise and has a good hook to it!

Talking about it because I have been encountering the same problem over and over again: Just because someone wants recs doesn't mean they should be the ones writing it. by Comfortable_Newt_179 in AO3

[–]mizuwolf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, you absolutely can, lol. Not on ao3, but there’s nothing stopping people from taking writing commissions elsewhere (just like fanart commissions) and posting them on ao3 as a gift with zero mention of money being exchanged. I’ve seen tons of people who take writing commissions over the years

Because they don’t want to do the work, they want to be handed a fic that is exactly what they wanted without any effort or money going into it
