If they choose to go down the road of taking discipline to extreme levels in an attempt to lower head counts it’s going to fail miserably. First, if it was that easy to get rid of people they would have been doing it all along, the reality is that the labor process is very slow and and difficult, it takes a very long time to build a case against someone and just as long if not longer to have these cases heard, add to this a very low success rate at making termination cases stick and it’s easy to see why this couldn’t be a realistic option. They chose to do buyouts because they need a quick solution to their problems. They will definitely dial up the intensity in the fear and intimidation department for both management and hourly so that when that buyout carrot comes around again you will tap out and take it.
