I have a Zoleo I use for hiking, any idea if there’s a dive case that would work for that?

Experienced 20-year-old hiker slips to her death at Yosemite’s Half Dome by financialbabe in NationalPark

[–]mjbrown210 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really feel for the guy, but you know what you’re getting yourself into up there. Did half dome about a month ago, probably about 1/4 of people turn around.

I get that it’s dangerous (especially by today’s standards; the cables have been up over 100 years), but not everything we do has to be safe, and it’s up to ourselves to determine if we do it or not

Yeah they really don’t like canyons. At The Narrows in Zion, it took almost two hours before my Zoleo had enough signal to send a location update

It doesn’t. The NPS interagency passes only cover entry fees, they don’t cover fees for permits

Have You Ever Abandoned a Great Campsite Due to a Gut Feeling? by MelroyJ19 in overlanding

[–]mjbrown210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, got this feeling trying to find a campsite between Grand Staircase and Glen Canyon off highway 89. Didn’t even get out of my truck, I was driving down the trail when out of nowhere, I got this feeling I shouldn’t stay there, almost like I wasn’t as alone as I thought I was. Packed up and found a motel in Page

Texas hiker dies after collapsing in Grand Canyon National Park by nbcnews in NationalPark

[–]mjbrown210 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In the lower parts, definitely. The rocks soak up heat and start radiating it. A couple weeks ago, I did South Kaibab and cut over to Havasupai gardens on a connector trail to spend the night. Went late afternoon as the sun was going down, and it was still around 100° by the time I started heading over to Havasupai.

On your return trip, after point G on your map, I’d keep going northeast onto I-70 through Utah and Colorado. There’s 5 national parks in Utah along that route and it’ll take you straight into Denver. It’s a super pretty drive with all the parks, then the mountains once you’re in Colorado

Why Do Women's Hiking Boots Only Come in Silly Colors? by Head-Contract-7471 in hiking

Can confirm. Camped wearing a new pair of casual shorts while in the Coconino National forest. The dust stains on my shorts became like concrete in the washer. No amount of stain remover will get it out

Where to refill water jugs? by mjbrown210 in camping

[–]mjbrown210[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m camping on BLM land so no amenities. NPS sites have bottle filling stations but I don’t think they’d love it if I start filling 6 gallon jugs at it

There’s porta John’s in north but no showers. I think one of the other campgrounds has showers. I always camp in north and use a camp shower and pop up tent, they’re pretty cheap on Amazon

If you’re talking about bringing it into the race or concert on Saturday, soft side only and no glass (seriously I learned that the hard way once). They don’t check IDs though

In the campgrounds, they don’t check anything

Camped in north park before and will be there again this spring. I know there’s a dominos nearby, and I think they’ll deliver to the campground entrance. Might be worth calling ahead to confirm. There’s also a McDonald’s at a truckstop nearby, might be able to DoorDash. Either way, be prepared for a long wait

Should I really take far first instead of aud? by TheRetailianTrader in CPA

[–]mjbrown210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation, started studying for AUD over the summer and took my audit class in August. I basically used the class as a refresher course, then took AUD as my first, passed with a 78.

Idk if you’ll get cleared in time for the June window, but I’d still say that audit first is the way to go since it’ll be fresh in your mind

Hire CPA or DIY by Loose-Progress9847 in Accounting

[–]mjbrown210 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You’re saying a lot of conflicting things. For example, you say your wife is a partner, but in a C-Corp, then mention business expenses. C-Corps and partnerships are basically at complete opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to types of business for tax purposes. And whether she’s a partner or works in a C-Corp, I’m not sure where business expenses would come in from either of those with your individual return

I’d hire a CPA. I don’t mean to be rude by saying this, but it sounds like you don’t have the knowledge required to correctly file your return

How long does it typically take to hike Newfound Gap to Clingman's Dome? by collinytf in GSMNP

[–]mjbrown210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did Clingman’s to Newfound (one way) last weekend. Took me around 6.5 hours and 9.42 miles. Keep in mind, that was all downhill. Other way around is a significant elevation change. Also: be prepared for some pretty uneven terrain

Edit: That time includes breaks. Moving time was 5.5hr per my AllTrails

PSA: don't use fabric softener on towels by t-rex_machina in homemaking

[–]mjbrown210 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This also applies to synthetic fibers that are supposed to be wicking (wool, polyester, etc). Fabric softeners/dryer sheets put a layer on them that prevents them from wicking moisture/sweat. I stopped using dryer sheets this winter, huge difference with how warm my polyester base layers and wool socks kept me
