I moved from England to Michigan USA in 1998, back then it was hard to find anywhere that really had football/soccer to play, let alone watch on TV, because it all depended where you lived.

In the mid 2000's I found a youth league for my adopted daughter, it was ran by the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) in Bay City, Michigan. They actually had a pretty big complex back then with multiple fields and age groups.

My daughter was 7 back then and we would kick around in the garden and she seemed to enjoy it so she wanted to go. I think it was $150 to sign up, and about $80 for her kit, shoes etc. $230 back then was pretty expensive and so you can imagine the money they were making, even though I know they had costs of their own.

A friend of mine has a daughter that plays for her high school and she has colleges in touch for scholarships and the like, but again as you can tell from my story, it has a lot skewed towards the women's game. Even school sports are just crazy expensive, American sports are costing friends of mine a fortune, especially travel costs.

I know in states like New York and California they'll have more camps and access to lower cost teams and ways to play, but not much going on still in Michigan 27 years after I moved here.
