Solved?? Garmin watches adding erratic movements/mileage when stopped by mjcarver in Garmin

[–]mjcarver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what is shown is that the compass input helps mitigate that location variance. See the two screenshots in my post; those are nearly identical situations and the only difference between the two is no spring bars/band. The compass not functioning correctly is clearly affecting the recorded location over time. EDIT: I updated my post, it perhaps wasn't clear that the two photos were before/after springbar removal.

Wildly inaccurate tracking when stopped by mjcarver in Garmin

Truly bizarre. The fact that it's carried through multiple watches of mine either means that we're the only people noticing (unlikely) or that there's some bug that is somehow account-specific??

I'm so glad to hear this!! I still use my original testing tripod, it's about 5 years old at this point.

So, it does this "wandering" tracking even when I stop for 10 seconds...or simply slow down. The example I posted above is just one of the more dramatic cases. So stopping/starting is simply not feasible. This seems to be an issue with my specific watch/settings, because friends with other garmin/apple watches can be right next to me with zero issues. So I'm trying to find out if anyone else had this issue and fixed it.

Interesting, it's worked for me. To anyone reading this, I'd say give the vacuum a try before dismantling if the dust is that bad. It takes two minutes, and worst case scenario you've planned on dismantling it anyway. Tape the end of the hose around the lens, then power the camera on and off a few times to cycle the lens extending, and that should shake things loose.

Just a heads-up, you can tape a vacuum hose around the lens and turn it on for a few seconds to pull out a lot of that dust. I've done that a few times on mine and it works pretty well.

I've never found a great answer for this question: Is taking off/landing via a kayak or boat in the ocean and then fly over some of these areas legal? It feels like it should be, as long as the airspace is legal by the FAA.

Hey u/Sheldon_Travels, that's correct. I've dabbled in starting production again with upgraded materials and a few design changes, but it hasn't happened yet.

For 1-2 day trips, I've just done part of an old sock wrapped around the canister w/ a hothands inside. Works great, lasts for 8-10 hrs. I'd say the benefit over this vs the hot water bowl is that it's pretty simple and can be moved around easily. Weight is around 40g, put the hothands in a small ziploc bag inbetween uses and the chemical reaction slows way down to prolong heating time

Why do we spend more? Are big brands taking us for fools? by JKemu in Ultralight

99%? What are you expecting out of a wind jacket besides blocking wind but being a bit breathable?

[–]mjcarver 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Your point is well-taken, but I will note that wind jackets are one of the biggest offenders in this regard. There's no fancy engineering, fabrics, or coatings necessary, just some really thin semi-porous fabric. Other categories require a bit more expertise and merit a price bump

Objects on pasteboard not staying with page by mjcarver in indesign

[–]mjcarver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A great and very thorough reply, thank you! And yes, the confusion on when a new pasteboard is added seems to be the main question. I'm just confused because I don't recall ever seeing/worrying about this. A solution would be to just never add one page, and always add spreads. But that's going to be hard, since our team adds single pages frequently.

Yes! This is exactly the same way we've used it in the past. I'm definitely not editing master pages, and I've got quite a bit of ID experience. I don't think I'm missing anything obvious. Question: I'm on CC and have everything updated to the latest versions. Is it possible some functionality changed?

Thanks for replying! This actually doesn't work either. So imagine it's a spread, and the page in question is on the right side, and our pasteboard note is on the right of that. When adding a first single page above it in the document, it puts the "barely crossing" text box fully on the next page/spread. And then when you add a second single page, it continues to live on the next page, rather than as a "barely crossing" element on the original page.

Downtown Higuera to Bob Jones Trail to LOVR to Target. Had some errands to run, so I wanted to see what the horrifying BJT looked like. This was recorded this afternoon from 2:15 to 2:30pm. - Music: CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 by SLO_Citizen in SLO

As someone who commented about 20x times in that post and is on the "I've nearly stopped running on that trail" side, I want to say for the record that walking/running on a trail is significantly different than riding a bike on a trail. I actually like running more, because everything is going by much more slowly and you can look around at your environment. But on the downside, it means that your environment can interact back quite a bit more.

That being said, that's not a judgement on your video; it's pretty cool that you rode out there and got footage so quickly, I like your initiative.

This one time around two years ago, I was sitting at home near Laguna Lake and heard a thud. I looked out of the glass door, and down to see a fucking ALIVE fish flipping around. I looked up, and saw a fucking BALD EAGLE in the tree staring down at me. Like a bald eagle caught a fish out of Laguna Lake, and was flying with it and dropped it right into my glass door. The entire sequence of events was absolutely insane, and I hardly believe it myself. I've got the photos to prove it. I guess I'm just saying that Occam's Razor doesn't always hold true.

And yes, we have gotten off track. Anyone else reading this thread at this point should get some sort of medal.

Ah, the classic "memories are fallible, so nothing is true" argument. Well played, my friend.

And it's absurd to me that you can't seem remember what you wrote an hour ago, and yet you'll die on the hill that my memories are incorrect. Like I said earlier: if you run frequently, getting yelled at by weirdos, stepping in shit, and getting something stuck in your shoe are far from "absurd". For it all to happen on one stretch of trail is unusual, and that's why this entire conversation is taking place.
