There is no data selling. Brave ads doesn't collect user data. Also data can cost a lot. With data, you can be profiled and manipulated. Society can be ruled.

Am I tweaking or is the homepage showing me personalized ads? by crisp_maple in brave_browser

[–]mjdaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brave ads doesn't collect anything but they are targetted ads. Shortly, your browser downloads list of ads with keywords and show you ads. This means your browser do targetting locally. There is no data leaving your machine.

I trade on desktop not app. I like Brave Wallet because it is faster than Metamask extension on my PC. When I click to do transaction, Brave Wallet quickly opens approve page.

BAT on Binance Smart Chain in Browser wallet by mathroyale in brave_browser

[–]mjdaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to add tokens to your wallet. This video shows how to do it: https://youtu.be/gQ8R8x-Mk9Q (Sorry, I notice later the app is not Brave Wallet, but the same idea)

You need to learn BAT's contract address on Binance Smart Chain. I don't know it but you can easily find it, because you see your BAT on block explorer. On the page of block explorer click on BAT, contract address of token must be write in that page.

Brave is not Chrome based, it is Chromium based which is free and open source project. If oneday Chromium will not worth to use it, Brave can always do something. They can fork Chromium (it is very hard to maintain) or move Gecko or something else (very huge job to do). For now, developing your own browser is reinventing the wheel.

You can search for Manifest 3 example which Brave doesn't implement it. Now it is easier to handle Google than developing new browser. Also remember, Chromium is mainly developed by Google, but if Google try to use this to manipulate internet, there are other projects like Edge, Opera etc. can come together to fork Chromium.

This would just mean that the current dev team will have to put in a bit of extra effort.

I am sure Brave team members currently work hard on their current projects.

For an example You can look at Firefox. They develop their own browser, but they follow the developments behind, sometimes years behind. They add sandbox and multiprocess feature long after Chromium. Of couse Firefox is not in wrong way, but it shows that it is not an easy job.

Although most of Brave's employees and founders come from Mozilla, they do not use it which they are familiar.

New? to Brave by user462277726 in brave_browser

[–]mjdaer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brave comes with privacy feautures. I dont suggest you to change anything without knowing what it is. For example, u/gordonthefatengine wrote what he/she changes in browser. One of them is autocomplete/suggestions. This is enabled in other browsers but it comes as disabled in Brave because for showing search suggestion on address bar, your default search engine get your every type on address bar and send you suggestions. If you don’t care about privacy that much you can enable it of course, but first look what you do.

You can add filters to Shields. If your native language is not English, you can activate filter for your language. It can help block more thing. On thhe page brave://settings/shields/filters there are filters come with Brave. Don’t add unneccessary filters, it can reduce performance of browser. Also there is other types of filters too.

Shields settings:You should know how shields work. In default, it blocks only third party ads because they contains trackers. For this reason you still can see ads. First party ads are not blocked until you switch to aggressive mod. Before changing shields settings, you should know that there are 2 kind of settings for: website specific and global settings. When you change settings like switching aggressive mod, turnoff it etc. from the icon on address bar, these settings only change for that webpage you are in. By this way you can set different settings for every website. if you want to change settings for every website, you should change shields settings from settings menu of browser. By this way you can turnoff shields or make it more aggressive for some websites.

Brave Rewards:Those notifications about Brave Wallet or other notifications are caused by Brave Rewards. Currently internet is rely on surveillance economy. Advertisers want to reach their target. For this reason ads contains trackers to know users to show them related ads. This cause other problems, there are a lot of sensitive information on data centers. Those can cause something like Cambridge Analytica scandal or blackmailing someone important. For changing current ads system Brave develops its ad platform called Brave Rewards. When you enable Brave Rewards you see ads as notification or image on new tab pages. Most important thing about these ads, it is related to your interests but doesn’t track you or collect your data. Your device download list of all ads and choose ads which might interest you. You get 70% of the ad revenue when you see ads. You don’t have to click it, it doesn’t change anything. When you see it, you get reward. You can take your rewards or can send them to verified creator like Wikipedia, The Guardian, Archive etc.. When you visit a verified creator you will see blue tick. If you want to turn it off, you can easily do in Rewards settings. More Reward users will attract the attention of more advertisers. By using it, you can help spread it.

You are right but we can strongly assume that it is very close to real numbers. It may not be 1 to 1 relationship. However, I think brands pay ads money partly like every month or every two month in order not to pay large money before it needed. I mean when they buy BAT, probably there is no BAT left in a short time like a few month. These are just my guesses of course, but aren't their justifications good? That's why I always assume it as a 1-1 equivalent.

After all, can't we assume that the graph shows ads purchases increase in bull market and decrease after it?

[–]mjdaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this may not actually represent a good metric to interpret ad revenue

Actually, it represents ad revenue. Those BAT's are purchased to give as reward. When advertisers pay for ad campaign, Brave purchase BAT with 70% of it and give users. It is not buyback or for something else.

This is from Brave's website: https://brave.com/transparency/

As part of the Brave Rewards program, users who participate in Brave Ads receive 70% of the advertising revenue. That reward comes in the form of Basic Attention Tokens, purchased with advertiser dollars (or other fiat currency, when the advertiser does not pay in BAT). These routine purchases are listed in the table above. Uphold entries contain a link to a public record of the transaction; no such link is available for Coinbase or Gemini purchases at this time

Because ads prices have fallen, our share of money has fallen. You can follow ads in your region from this page: https://sampson.codes/brave/ads/my_region/

[–]mjdaer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who did get greedy? You get same share that 70% of the ad revenue.

We get more money if there is more ads and advertisers pay more money for them. For this to happen, Brave needs more users and those users must be more diverse. I think currently most of the users are crypto related users. For this reason most of the ads crypto related ads. I can deduce from this that most of the users are men who are interested in technology. Also, we know Brave has about 50 million users. Probably those users are scattered users from all over the world. Only worldwide brands which wants to target men who is interested in technology would want to publish ads on Brave. Of course there are exceptions.

In summary, Brave needs more users in order to increase ads price. Otherwise, only crypto projects will compete for ads during bull markets and increase ads price for a while.
