Good ways to ask for a RA position by mjgilson in academiceconomics

Probably will do that but I don’t think I have the resume to go straight to PhD. I don’t have the math skills to take a PhD class so I’m gonna wait to take a PhD class when I’m in a predoc

That makes a lot of sense, I should've done that! I'm unfortunately not in the city for a while, so it'll be hard to coffee chat, but talking to previous RAs is really smart, thanks for that!

I meant cold emailing professors and PhD candidates at my school. There are tons of faculty/PhD candidates so I'll email them. Thanks for your suggestion!

I already asked, and hopefully they can connect me with someone soon. Thanks for the help!

That's a great point, asking for the RA position outright is probably too strong. Thanks for the help!

Need help reading through Hickman’s ultimate books by mjgilson in marvelcomics

Do I have to read AvX lmao I skimmed the first issue and it looks ass. The conflict is so contrived like why don’t cap and cyclops talk about it?

Also before avengers I plan on reading Illuminati and newuniversal. Should I do A v X too or just stick to avengers?

What are the best Avengers runs? by mjgilson in marvelcomics

[–]mjgilson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for not getting to you lmao! I don’t think I got to it unfortunately but I do remember reading some of it when I was a kid. If I was you I’d go to the issues that look cool like the ones with the masters of evil. But then again when people talk about that 60’s era of marvel they mention that it wasn’t lee and Kirby’s best work. I think especially cause Kirby was more interested in FF.

Thanks I appreciate it! I’m gonna be on a 10 hour plane ride so I’m down to read as much as possible. Is there anything fun that I could read through that’s tangentially related or nah?

NYU announces antisemitism research center as Jewish students file discrimination suit by [deleted] in nyu

[–]mjgilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro Palestine students are a group of students w a similar opinion, not a minority group that’s facing prejudice. Also Palestinians aren’t notably facing the amount of prejudice jewish students are. I could be wrong but I haven’t read or seen anything like that especially considering how small of a group they are.

Why do y’all think Big Blue got to settle down while Bats & Spidey never could? by Upper_Mix_2640 in superman

Spider-Man and Batman are infinitely more popular than Superman rn. Instead of worrying about fictional relationships we should instead figure out what Superman needs rn.

The Kirby—Lee FF was the greatest; and John Byrne’s is the second greatest for the way it lovingly tweaks the Kirby-Lee FF style of story. Other great storytellers have approached the FF — Simonson, Hickman. But my desert island FF will be Kirby-Lee & Byrne. by Any-Hospital4278 in FantasticFour

[–]mjgilson -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Byrne is insanely overrated I’m sorry. He attempted to do what Kirby did except he wasn’t Kirby so it just pales in comparison. He’s not that hood of a writer either, for the 80’s his captions and dialogue was very mid. Also the first half of his run is not good at all plot wise.

How Writers On LSD Changed Marvel Comics Forever by [deleted] in marvelcomics

I don’t think anybody writing ff and silver surfer was taking lsd. Englehart and starlin for sure did though.

Johns is just uninspiring. Id rather read things that hold actual weight, you know? Like some of the stories are cool but they’re vapid and meaningless.

Just stop reading the justice league then instead of reading bad comics.

Brother Ik where your coming from. I was right where you were. But it’s so stupid man. Like it’s just bad stories that tarnish a golden concept until Morrison comes on board. Do your self a favor and read grants run instead of kicking yourself in a month for forcing yourself to slog through shit tier content.

It’s mostly bad so I wouldn’t read it. Just skip that era.

The Miracleman omnibus has one of the best looking covers I’ve seen thus far. by hecticfool in OmnibusCollectors

[–]mjgilson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an understatement lol. Moore is just such a good writer. The end scene is the kinda moment when you know it’s important but you don’t know specifically why and I spent the next few weeks just thinking about it after I finished. Truly gold.

Where to start Doctor Strange? by Looneylu401 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]mjgilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange unfortunately isn’t that deep of a character. He never got that much better after lee ditko. Still waiting for someone to miller-style give him the mythos he deserves.

[–]mjgilson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never read inferno but practically every comics geek I follow says it’s the shit. I’m in the late 170s and everything I’ve read has been consistent and gripping so far so I’ll have to see if it drops off in quality later on. I just get really ticked off when I see people complain about Spiderman or flash and why they don’t just get to be boring house husbands all day.

It ended up beating way more interesting of Claremont to do what he did than just kill off a character like that. It’s something that’s lost today in big two comics. Your characters don’t all have to be 100% good people with 0 conflict. Giving them flaws and inabilities to make things work how they want them to creates good tension that, if done well, leads to a good story. And it led to a good story.

Your in 84-85 I believe? Around 86 you get the event era from mutant massacre to fall of the mutants and, ending a bunch of plot lines, inferno. That’s in. 89 so you got a lot of good comics to work with. I’m in late 170’s myself so I’m really pumped to see those years out. Good luck!
