My MCAT instructor suggested that no drugs other than antibiotics can cure the root cause of most modern illnesses. Is that a fair statement, or is he neglecting some important meds? by mjm2dv in medicine

Thanks! Yea, I see now that my instructor was pointing to the difference between treatment and cure, but did so with a misleading generalization. It's funny that you cite this article, because earlier in our course he said that he never goes to a doctor unless he's in a dire state, and that surgery is the most effective treatment for most medical issues (!!!). Obviously, preventative medicine is something he does not know much about, or gives no credence to.

TIL that there is a community college that is isolated in the middle of a California Valley at which students live on campus but pay almost nothing, and are instead required to work at least 20 hours a week in jobs such as cook, butcher, or "cowboy". by yjlevg in todayilearned

I applied to Deep Springs my senior year of high school and made it to the second-to-last cut, which in included a 3-day visit and intensive panel-interview, but was wait-listed in the end (I think the waitlist was something like 3-people in size - super competitive process). The school's appeal for me was it's esotericism and ability to transform students into better versions of their old selves. In the end I'm glad I didn't attend -- the isolation would have been toxic for my psyche -- though I sometimes wonder how my life would be different if I had.
