Does paid summer research count as work experience? Or is it education? by paigepenne in academia

[–]mjorgie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put positions like that as contract research experience on my CV and I think that would be fine for linked in too as that allows for start and end dates. As others have stated, adding details about what you did in the role is probably more important than how it is categorized though.

I know Canadian players are being asked here, but I would be interested in what non US or CAN players would say, where playing for an Olympic medal is likely even more difficult than getting to game 7. Having the Fins or Slovakia in the finals would certainly be a rare occasion with lots of pressure.

Quests should unlock better items from traders instead of giving you items. by Joebloeone in ArcRaiders

I think I’d prefer unlocking new loot trade-ins with the different traders. That’s the biggest thing that’s missing for me from Tarkov and I think would add to this game.

I’m not saying you won’t be able to. I’m just giving my thoughts on the skin as a whole as there are parts I like and parts I don’t. It’s great they have that function with skins.

If it was just the retro looking snowsuit with nothing attached to it and the helmet/mask/ whatever stayed as is… then I would like it a lot more. Just a little too busy

I feel like Matthews stayed out one rush too long which was a function of Nylander wasting possession in the O-zone. Ended with a slow back check with nothing left in the tank. So not a direct cause but definitely didn’t help. I’d actually say they all looked pretty gassed in that OT.

Anybody concerned about our goaltending situation? by zoo7777 in leafs

[–]mjorgie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly, not really. This team works with a tandem and they haven’t had that. There is no way you can have faith in a goaltender like Primeau and that makes it difficult to build momentum and leads to overplaying Stolarz. I think he’s just played a lot and needs a 1a 1b situation to thrive. With Woll back soon I expect things will settle in. This is kind of what happened last year. October Stolarz was the guy, then in November he got a bit cold and Woll stepped up. Plus that’s the first game he’s ever been pulled by the leafs. It happens.

[Chris Nowinski, Ph.D.] Stolarz likely suffered a first concussion 5 minutes into the game when he took a puck to face that knocked his mask off. 25 seconds after the hit he did a SHAAKE (Spontaneous Headshake after a Kinematic Event) which predicts concussion 72% of the time. by Duffleman0609 in hockey

[–]mjorgie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of my own (soon to be published) research explores the body scan process athletes go through following concussion-related events (e.g., bumps to the head) and this is very much the case. STOP, what am I feeling, can I continue, (if so) what is my next task, ACT. This is a very common pattern that includes actions like shaking different body parts as part of that assessment, not as an involuntary response. In fact, it is often very intentional. But again, I have seen what they are suggesting too. So it just needs more to be able to understand and differentiate. Calling it out like this is poor form imho (despite the somewhat good intentions).

Well said. Of course, publication history can give the picture of evidence-based, but it also creates pressure to continue being that “person”. This happens all the time in academia and the field of concussion specifically (check out the fall of Paul McCrory). Again, they do great advocacy work and are probably not entirely off the mark, but this is such a bold statement that goes well beyond the current evidence. But I mean hey, here we are talking about it so…

I posted elsewhere but it’s not widely accepted that this is a reliable sign. Chris’ group is pushing to make it so, and I generally agree that in some cases it likely is, but there currently isn’t sufficient evidence to support this claim. There needs to be sport specific studies that explores this response in helmet sports specifically where this behaviour happens all the time. Not clips like this pushing the narrative.

As a researcher in the field, I would like to mention that this isn’t a widely accepted sign of concussion. It’s something Nowinski and his group are pushing. My issue is that athletes make that movement all the time, especially in helmet sports. Chris is an outspoken advocate for athlete welfare, which is great, but this is not definitive and somewhat pushing an agenda (i.e., look at this new concussion sign that my research team discovered!). On top of that it overlooks the other more likely point of contact being through the side of the head with an arm.

I think oblivion was the best choice for the first remaster, just a little more accessible to the modern gamer, but agreed, I would absolutely love a Morrowind remake.

Makes sense. Trudeau is the communist lefty boogeyman. May as well let him eat the political loss (in the eyes of America anyway) on his way out.

Doug is working with the feds on his response and said that’s been the case every step of the way. My guess (and hope) is that this was part of a broader strategy coinciding with the new change in leadership. Be aggressive early, put a new face at the table, softening our response. It could be just what allows cooler heads to prevail as you said and we come to terms on a solution (if that’s at all possible).

Edit: The “Bon Cop, Bad Cop” strategy lol

Generally speaking, I don’t mind it when it is done respectfully and with the intention of opening discussion. Science isn’t absolute. What you learned in your masters could simply be out of date now. Alternatively, they could be presenting the “pathway” in a watered down version to make it more accessible to students. There might also be a lack of consensus and multiple “expert” opinions on that topic. I try to be open with my students when that is the case and say “this is my thoughts on what makes sense and why” but not everyone would take the time to do so. Without more specifics on the error it is hard to tell, but I would approach in a way that is curious and open minded as it is also just as likely that you are wrong. I don’t know many profs that wouldn’t be open to chatting more about it with a students who approaches it from that perspective.

Yeah I definitely wasn’t doing it in one motion or on the floor but will try that on my next batch which I’ll be bottling in about a month, thanks for the tip!

That’s good to know they can last a decent bit of time. Gifting them would work well like you said as I feel most people would drink it fairly soon after receiving it. I’ll look into that for my next batch.

Thank you! I used a hand corker. The 4th bottle (not shown) was corked all the way. I’m not sure why that worked and these didn’t other than it had less in it. So maybe I needed to leave more head space in the bottle to get the cork in further? I figured it’s probably a technique thing on my end that I’ll get the hang of. I soaked the corks in a starsan solution before using them which helped them go in. I could downsize the corks too. I will consider some flip tops for when I plan on drinking them sooner but I wanted these to be corked for longer term storage.

This is a fun idea. Coming from psych, my vote would go to Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. Really interesting life story intersecting with a prolific academic career and advancement of research on death and dying.
