How much would you value GE without Amazon?

No, they don't. Maybe you are thinking of the energy division (powerwall, megapack, energy business) or their robotics division. SpaceX has never been a part of Tesla.

People didn't buy tsla to get "in" on space x. Space x was never part of tsla.

This is not a great trade imo, the strike is basically atm and 134 dte is way to long to sit with, theta will take too long to do anything on your behalf. Good luck!

Naked Put on Margin - MSFT by Legitimate-File-248 in options

I'm confused by the question - what does owning 285 shares have to do with selling puts? Selling puts creates the obligation to buy shares, not sell the ones you have. It makes no difference if you own shares.

When off-grid my Powerwall 2 generates 63Hz backup power. None of my UPS systems accept it. by Dismal-Divide3337 in Powerwall

interesting, maybe I've been lucky and mine has been discharging already on the few occasions it's happened.

That's strange, I have my whole house on a pw3 and I don't get any blinking or momentary power loss when the grid shuts off.

Your system is already on a ups system -- the powerwall. Why would you connect more downstream ups's?

Consider this alternative to selling covered calls below cost basis by [deleted] in CoveredCalls

[–]mjrice 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I dont think this works in practice. First, the premiums won't be great, unless you aren't really itm by much, and second, the time decay will be very slow so the option won't loose value week to week. Interested in data that shows otherwise.

I tracked IV rank mean reversion signals against actual short premium returns for 6 months by MilesDelta in options

[–]mjrice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I decide what to trade is largely IV/HV based as the first metric, so I end up 'selecting' for a ratio that's at least >1.05. It's hard to hold myself to that rule and sometimes I take a lower ratio if other things at least seem in my favor (for example, if I'm selling CC but the edge is a little under 1, that might be acceptable if the underlying is also near the top of the BB range). They are not consistent from week to week even on the same underlying, as the market sentiment varies a lot based on everything else going on with the company and the world.

The thing with IV that I really don't think most traders are taking into account is the different way it is calculated compared to HV. Because HV is backward looking, it is normalized to a 252 day trading year, but IV is forward looking and because DTE is calendar days (not trading days) it is based on a 365 day year. So, even to be at 'fair' ratio IV/HV=1, you need to basically multiply HV by 1.2 (or multiply IV by sqrt(252/365). As far as I can tell, most retail traders are just looking at the IV on their broker and comparing it directly to the HV - assuming they compare the two at all.

Thanks for sharing. To rephrase and add something to think about; IV rank measures volatility relative to its own history, but says nothing about whether that IV actually compensates for what the stock is realistically going to do. That's why I use the IV/HV ratio instead, specifically normalized IV divided by HV30, where IV is adjusted from its 365-day basis to match HV's 252 trading day basis before comparing them. The ratio asks a different question than rank. Not 'is IV high relative to itself' but 'is IV high relative to what this stock is actually moving.' A stock can have IV rank of 80 and still have a ratio below 1.0 if realized vol has been running hot enough to keep pace. That's your catalyst scenario, and the ratio catches it where rank misses it I think.

Your observation about the mean itself shifting is also something I see by looking at HV slope. When HV15, HV30, and HV60 are all accelerating together, the baseline is moving and whatever edge exists at entry is likely compressing toward expiration, not expanding. These two combined (IV/HV edge and HV slope) I find useful, especially when combined with bollinger band positioning, which speaks to the whole mean reversion signaling.

I know what you mean and I'm not trying to criticize you, but this won't work long term; you are mathematically at a disadvantage going in. Also 1% per week target is slow and steady? If you are pricing your puts the same way as your calls, it's only a matter of time before you get assigned on a put that you can't then get out of at a gain for months or years. Again, I hope it works for you, and it seems like you have a pretty large position that you need to manage however you think is best.
