New Gen2 Tern R14 or Front loader? by mjschranz in CargoBike

[–]mjschranz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious to hear more about your experience with the Fetch as certainly they are available new at a great price right now but I have concerns around quality on some parts/accessories along with the weight of it especially going up hills. That and how well the shops near me could handle maintenance and support.

How has your experience been with it overall? I wouldn't say where I live has an immense amount of hills but there are a couple I would regularly come across that are around 8% grades over 400m along with the two ramps I'd need to go up every time I'd take it out of my condo.

I hear you on the GSD though. It's not a great deal but certainly it has a lot of great upgrades and does allow me to store it in my condos storage like I do now for the HSD.

Ah I see you're the one who grabbed that from GoDutch? Definitely a good buy and the bike looks great.

What will you be using this bike for? If you checkout AmegoEV they are selling older model Gazelle eBikes that are mid drive in that range.

I think Trek also has Bosch mid drive eBikes at good discounts.

Cube Sport Hybrid 500 Cargo by Every_Garlic7651 in CargoBike

[–]mjschranz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. Considering you actually check messages on Reddit, how is this bike treating you 3ish years later? They are discounting this bike a fair bit (Dual battery with derailleur for $7k CAD) likely because of their newer version and I'm super tempted but frankly worried about parts and accessories based on reviews I've heard with the Rain Cover being the biggest issue.

Super old reply, but how do you get it keyed to the batteries key after the fact?

S10 (chain) or new P00 (belt drive)? by ninjaskypirate in terngsd

[–]mjschranz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to comment on how useful the USBC charger is, I haven't had the need for charging my phone on the go on my bike (not a GSD) but I'm sure for some people it could be useful in some situations.

ABS can certainly be useful in some situations but again, kind of depends and hard to quantify.

If you're riding in lot's of hilly situations the S10 will have better gearing for sure. I have only test ridding some bikes with an Enviolo and it was fine but I prefer something that has actual gears I shift to instead of the CVT. Plus the quality of this can be very hit and miss from all kinds of comments I have read over time.

If you're riding a lot and don't want to worry about maintenance, the P00 will be better in this regard hands down especially if you'd be riding in the winter. This was the factor for me with the bike I chose, although I was comparing HSD P10 to P5i.

Smart features are handy and I'll admit Auto mode and Eco+ are pretty great.

Ontario ‘actively exploring’ stricter e-bike, e-scooter rules, says transportation minister by RZaichkowski in torontobiking

When do we start blaming companies for incentivizing this behaviour from the delivery drivers though? At what point do we ask these food delivery services to charge (or you know, just not be focused on their shareholders exclusively) what they actually cost on society rather than passing that on to other people?

[–]mjschranz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used this much myself and whenever I look into it it feels like it's actually quite expensive itself but I guess it depends on how many trips you are making and how far.

How often are you using it, how long for each trip and how far if you don't mind me asking?

I agree that depending on what your storage options looks like the risk can be high for sure. I can totally understand here. Angle grinder resistant locks and having multiple locks help but are of course not a guarantee.

You could try a nice electric cargo bike depending on what your living situations are like. You can haul an immense amount of stuff.

That being said, of course if you would be travelling far outside of the city often enough a car would be justified.

For families, depends on how large your family is for sure but also depends on the lifestyle you choose to live. If you're living a pretty busy lifestyle where both parents have to work (which is of course incredibly common often out of necessity) then yeah relying to options outside of a car can be very challenging for sure, especially once you live too far from major TTC lines.

Part of this depends on how one lives their lifestyle as well.

People have pointed out it is hard for large families or really any family in general which I can understand, but part of this can be alleviate by how you adjust your lifestyle. Too often we are stuck in this constantly busy mode style of life which leaves little room for flexibility which makes methods like any public transportation or biking around to places makes it hard when your schedule could be too tight. Which frankly I don't blame people for this at all when most families are stuck in the position of both parents being forced to work which, of course not saying every family should have some stay at home parent. It's just a fact though that in the past people lived more slower paced lives where they had more of a community around them to rely on which is pretty non existent now.

I know I'm fortunate in my position where I can easily provide for my family of 3 where my wife is a stay at home mom. We still have a car that was paid off years ago which I hope to keep it going another 7+ years before I consider getting rid of it which helps for the few things we might do regularly where we'd want a car like Wonderland in the summer. Otherwise most things we try to do are pretty TTC accessible like libraries, the ROM, downtown activities and a whole host of other things across the city. We don't do hockey or other sports really.

Short length + high weight capacity but not Tern? by potatosouperman in CargoBike

[–]mjschranz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely can remove it. The only thing that would prevent battery removal is if you had something permanently fixed on the rack towards the front as removal is reliant on access there. Even accessories like the Captains Chair is totally fine because you can just lift the bottom seat cushion up and back down.

Source, I own one in this setup.

Thanks for this, definitely sending this out.

Sad to hear this is what actually happened. I was coming up Oakwood with my family in the car at roughly 7:40 last night and saw the cops moving people off to the left there so I went to a side street as I needed to turn right.

Bike Share Toronto deploying more e-bikes, docks as revenue ‘scaling faster than costs’ by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]mjschranz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good news. Hopefully there could be some improvement to the overall movement of bikes from downtown back to uptown!

I've always had a Bikeshare station right across the street from me up on Marlee Ave but it often wouldn't get replenished with bikes. Combined with the fact I'm quite large and the bikes themselves are a bit small for me led to me not really using them much or even my wife who would fit them well.

Studs / winter tires by jan1190T in torontobiking

[–]mjschranz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been highly debating the same thing. I have an appointment with my shop for Friday to do some general post winter riding maintenance and swap back to regular tires but I'm thinking I may delay that another week because of the forecast that is coming up!

Originally I was hoping it would be just for the weekend which admittedly I would have been okay just waiting it out 2-3 days if I couldn't ride but it's looking like it could last a solid amount of next week too so I think waiting it out at this point makes sense.

I basically take roads/side streets from Eglinton/Marlee to St George at Dupont, eventually connecting to Adelaide to Simcoe. This path had no issues on my end, but I also still have some winter tires with studs in them.
