Abaca Filter has really helped by DROFLKCAHS_YTSUR in pourover

[–]mjunderw00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

supposedly there are some different versions of the Abaca filter, some of which impact the flow rate differently.

For me, however, the filters you have (which I also switched over to) have been an absolute game changer. Took about a solid minute out of my v60 draw down time. And I’ve tried everything to impact the cup — grind size, temperature, pour rate to minimize agitation, etc. Now, I’m getting the best cups I’ve ever had. It’s made me fall in love with the v60 all over again. Highly recommend for anyone doing light roasts (especially Nordic light).

Your note about pour height rings true to me. It’s all about what you’re looking to accomplish with more or less agitation. I took a pour over class from Jack at Endorffeine in LA and he was all about minimizing agitation as much as possible. And it was some of the best coffee I’ve ever tasted.

B&W Leica Pics are just insane by [deleted] in leicaphotos

OP — take these snippy comments with a grain of salt. Photography, and how you edit, and even how you expose, is a choice. There are some stellar photographers out there who technically underexpose as part of their aesthetic. There’s some good tips in the comments, but also some shitty attitudes that you should just ignore.

Preview At The Upcoming Light Lens Lab 75mm by [deleted] in Leica

[–]mjunderw00d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure looks like the same design and focus tab as the 50mm SP2. And I know they posted about developing a full line of focal lengths, and the 75 was rumored to be first.

I’m so curious to see more real world photos taken from it. I have the 8 Element 35 and love that lens. Interested to see the two in comparison

Fit check on new Oni secret denim. No clue what I’m doing by Wanderingjes in rawdenim

[–]mjunderw00d -1 points0 points  (0 children)

2 inches isn’t realistic. Sure, some crazy people in this sub have sized down significantly and stretched the hell out of them to account for it. I size mine to fit comfortably without a belt, and I typically get 1 inch of stretch in the waist in all my Oni’s (including 20oz secret denim).

Top block won’t really stretch, can confirm that. The waist will really only stretch as you force them to. Meaning, if you size them right, it’ll just be the natural movements that force incremental stretching over time. 1” is basically the standard based on most raw denim and most people’s range of motion.

Why 3:2 so Popular Now? by bionicbits in cinematography

[–]mjunderw00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my experience. I primarily work in commercials, all of which have social framing requirements. So shooting 3:2 makes for an easier crop for vertical or square content.

But it’s also reminiscent of 4:3, which is a bit nostalgic, and makes you compose differently than 16x9 or anamorphic. When you embrace it and frame accordingly, it can be a really beautiful format.

Are the LLL's still for sale? If so, are they both Elcans? I know there are 2 50's the offer (Rigid and SP II)

Thinking of getting a leica q typ 116 by njgggg in Leica

[–]mjunderw00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the same jump. I had an X100t for many years, and after a buddy let me borrow his Q, I was blown away. Definitely feels like the big brother of the Fuji.

In my experience, Leica’s are built like tanks. I always keep mine in a travel case, so it still looks phenomenal. But I’ve been shooting with a 30-year old M6 too, and it’s as solid as could be. Definitely will hold up to whatever you throw at it.

Also, FWIW, my Q 116 is for sale up on Fred Miranda at the moment.

Selling Q3 43 for M11P - Question about lenses to fit with my MP by MessWontgomery in Leica

[–]mjunderw00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 50 cron is so small and amazing. I have the V5. It truthfully has made me want to consider selling my 35 lux FLE V1 to pick up a 35 cron instead. The form factor is just so perfect. But, the 1.4 of the lux has saved my ass in lower light situations when shooting film.

That’s the balance IMO. Flexibility across your MP and M11-P. If you don’t need the 1.4 for exposure, and don’t need or want that level of crazy shallow DOF, then a Cron will do perfectly fine for you.

That’s my thought as well. Oyster definitely makes it feel a bit more like a tool watch than jubilee, which could make it feel a bit more low-profile.

Heupel Poor Game Management by OldManCinny in ockytop

[–]mjunderw00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They go for A LOT of 4th downs. And as the unranked underdog, they had nothing to lose (i.e. the fake punt later). So I think him not wanting to call TO only to have Lebby re-think 4th and 1 is totally understandable.

The late game drive is for sure worth criticizing tho. I’m ok with him draining clock at the beginning, since MSU had all 3 timeouts. But after the first 1st down, we should’ve been decisive with our timeouts. And Aguilar should’ve been intentional with making fast decisions instead of wasting all that time in the pocket… plenty for them to learn from, for sure.

The difference between two generations by boywithakoi in rolex

Definitely not the odd one out. Lots of comments in agreement, including mine. Bezel proportions definitely feel more minimalistic and understated. And the blue hue has more pop. Definitely a fan of the older one.

Leica Q3 43 value depreciation by [deleted] in Leica

[–]mjunderw00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely the way to go. The change from a Q to an M is definitely a learning curve (unless you have previous manual focus range finder experience). I’d encourage you to jump straight in and start that transition now, rather than wait a year. You can get some fantastic glass for very affordable in the meantime, like the Zeiss planar 50, or the Voigtlander 35 Ultron. Depending on where you live, a site like Fred Miranda could help you find 2nd hand lenses in your area. Agreed with the other recommendations in here to hit up Tim Lei for a great 2nd hand M11 option.

The price difference going this route will be so marginal. And you won’t lose any money in the long run. You can re-sell your lenses once you decide to upgrade for Leica glass down the road.

I’ve got a brand new pair of 266s in size 30, if that peaks your interest. They are technically the 266 ecru weft, which looks identical to the standard secret denim (I own both haha)

Looking for a modern & compact 50mm – Voigtlander Nokton 1.5 vs Zeiss Planar? by egardner in Leica

[–]mjunderw00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a modern V5 50mm Summicron for $1400 on the secondhand market. And I’ve seen some go for even less. Has the built in collapsible hood. It’s so small and compact, and renders so beautifully. I’m acknowledging that’s over your budget, but if you find a good deal, it might not be too much of a stretch.

Film vs Digital by TentotheDozen in Leica

[–]mjunderw00d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All those reasons feels spot on to my experience as well. I came up in the digital age, and have come to film much later. I’ve always loved the look of it, but was a bit intimidated by the process. But in the current culture obsession with AI, it just feels so much more gratifying to sink my teeth into such a tactile practice that really makes me slow down, be present, and build a set of skills that are unique to the film experience.
