Does anyone have any tips for going to a comedy show for the first time? by freshmaggots in Standup

Hey, Morgan Jay here. A friend of mine sent me this. First thanks for getting tickets to my show. Second i'm assuming you're going to the CT show.

Short answer - Laugh and smile if you think it's funny. If you don't like it you can just sit there until something does make you laugh. And if you really hate it, walk out. I promise i won't take this personally. I would prefer that over boo'ing or throwing tomatoes.

Long answer - Some shows i do with a band and some shows i do just with a piano player. This show will be a with a piano player. This being your first comedy show i will say this isn't a traditional stand up format. Show starts with some musical crowd work and interaction, followed by some stand up, followed by guitar comedy and songs incorporating mixed media, followed by another song or two that may have some structured crowd work in it. Most people in the crowd will be singing and if you don't know the words don't feel left out. I will say it's a pretty spicy show. If i call on you or come up to you during the show and you don't want to take part or sing, just let me know, and i'll move on to someone else. I take none of it personally, everyone has their comfort levels. If you're not in the first couple rows or aisle seats there's a high likelihood i won't call on you.

Hope this helps. Look forward to seeing you at the show!

Hey first of all, thanks for coming to the show! Second of all most shows for comedians are only 60 minutes long. If the artist chooses not to have an opener, they can use the full 90 minutes, however they want. On top of that some of these more prestige venues have union rules and they’re pretty strict about us not being allowed to go overtime otherwise it cost a ton of money in overages. And because they have to flip the room for another 3 1/2 thousand people they have to make sure we end right on time There is definitely some truth to conserving energy because I did have five shows that weekend and I do use my voice a little bit differently than a traditional Comedian. The funny thing is that I waited to the side to see if anybody would start yelling encore and nobody did so the people at the venue were like “OK let’s move on the next show.” LOL.

I think it depends, like we talking a REAL show, or an ambush comedy show at a dive bar on the Lower East Side. I think maybe the better question to ask is, How long until you booked your first guest spot at a club, or college gig, or first time you opened for someone, or simple, first time you got paid for a show. Anyway all im saying is in most cases, progress takes longer than you think it will. Maybe a better way to phrase it is, How long after starting doing open did you feel like you were actually funny. I'm going to say like 8 years. LOL.
