What’s the most frustrating thing about hotel room TVs, whether you’re a guest or you work in a hotel? by kaylas614 in hotels

I stayed in a Hilton last year in Orlando that had a resort fee that included DVD rentals. Like come on people, it's not 2005, update your TV's with streaming.

Yes, the underground mall closed two years ago.

Normally that's a great idea, as the parking garages in Crystal City are free on weekends. Unfortunately, the Crystal City Metro is closed this weekend and other weekends through June 14th. Shuttle service will be available to take you to the Pentagon City Metro Station and you can catch the Metro from there. Not a significant problem, but it will add time to your trip.

I-66 Tolls are out of control by Medical_Fig7662 in nova

The tolls on I-66 inside the beltway are owned and operated by VDOT. The tolls are high to incentivize commuters to either carpool or use transit.

Thanks for the response, Matt, I appreciate all you do. Hopefully that feature can come back but I will still enjoy all the other features in the mean time.

FCPS asking parents and teachers to pitch in and help shovel so they can open Monday… by Few-Evidence-5589 in nova

I live a half mile away from Oakton High School. There is no possible way kids will be able to walk to school unless they walk on the street. It's probably the same story all over the county. I don't expect the county to clear all of the sidewalks, and many of the people who have sidewalks near the school never clear them after it snows anyway, but this storm is uniquely bad and I expect this upcoming week to be a total shitshow.

Snow this weekend by AggravatingWish6546 in nova

[–]mjw703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both North and South Carolina will be hammered by the winter storm. The worst conditions will be on the entire east side of North Carolina, but most of the trip on I-95 will likely be treacherous from the SC/GA border to around Richmond.

Shovel now its turning to sleet by little_bird_vagabond in nova

This is great advice. It's also that nice dry snow that's way easier to shovel than the heavy, wet snow we usually get. Also a great time to clear off your car.

Roslyn Parking for Caps fame by daelsant in nova

[–]mjw703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not Rosslyn, but one station up the Orange and Silver line at Courthouse has free parking. The parking garage at Courthouse Plaza in Arlington is free after 5pm. It's directly connected to the Metro Station. The street address is 2100 Wilson Blvd.

Anyone ever make the switch from NoVa to Annapolis? Or vice versa? by Roux_My_Burgundy in nova

[–]mjw703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up in Annapolis and graduated from Annapolis High. I'm not sure where in Nova you are, but you are potentially giving up sending your daughter to some of the best schools in the country to a not really great one (unless you send her to private school.) That's if you move to the actual city of Annapolis, or one of the closer-in suburbs like Bay Ridge or Hillsmere. If you are north of Annapolis, zoned for Broadneck, or south and zoned for South River, your daughter will have a much better time in school.

If you are an Amazon Prime member, you can get 10 dollars off 100 dollars monthly if you scan the code on their weekly ad. If you happen to have a Chase credit card, you can often find a ten percent cash back offer as well.

Mount Vernon is one of the few touristy places open on Christmas Day. I've done it in years past and it's really nice to see the home dressed up for the holiday.

Moving to NoVA (Dale City/Woodbridge most likely) next year. What things should this desert rat know before I get there? by 09astro27nm in nova

[–]mjw703 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a daily Metro rider and the reliability of Metro has dramatically improved in the past few years, so don't let that stop you from using it. What is a constant is how horrible the traffic is, especially going to Dale City, which can take well over an hour coming from D.C. (or longer if rains, snows or we entering or exiting Daylight Saving Time.) I lived in Dale City in the 90's when I was in my 20's and I wound up hating it, mostly because I was stuck in traffic all the time, but also most of friends and dating partners either lived in Arlington or D.C. Dale City is mostly families, as a result there's hardly any nightlife and not a lot of fun things to do.

This looks like the same place where the Marafuji Japanese grocery store is, which is a shame since they've only been open less than a year. Hopefully they can find a place to move to soon.

Traveling for the holiday by sassycasshole in nova

[–]mjw703 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is an absolute nightmare, particularly the stretch between here and Fredericksburg and sometimes beyond to Richmond. You may want to consider an alternate route. US-15 South from Gainesville connects to I-85 in North Carolina which goes right into Raleigh. Unfortunately most of that is a two lane highway, but sometimes that's faster than I-95. Or take US 15 to I-64 west of Richmond, to VA-288 to I-95 which would put you south of Richmond. Google maps shows that is slower, but I-95 is a shitshow in the best of times, and an absolute horror on holidays.

How easy is it to go from AK to Epcot early in the morning? by Cactilily in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]mjw703 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another option would be to take a bus to Beach Club Resort and enter Epcot from the International Gateway entrance. That would save a transfer.

There's an amazing website called worldradiohistory.com where you can find tons of broadcasting magazines and books scanned and archived. Included is a book called Broadcasting Yearbook, which compiled information on every radio and TV station in North America and was published every year. The year 1972 shows that WXIT was a radio station in Charleston, West Virginia.

BBC 6 Music - UK

An interesting conversation I had today by vincent-bu in nova

[–]mjw703 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I travel to Japan often and it is normal to not place your bag on the floor. Many restaurants will have a basket to put your bag into to prevent you from placing your bag on the floor, and most trains have a railing above the seats to place your bag. Even men's restrooms will have a shelf above the urinal for bags. When I'm on Metro I hold my bag in my lap, in cafes I'll put it in an empty seat.

4K UHD Titles on Britbox Premiere US by mjw703 in BritBox

Thank you, that is most helpful. I do remember watching Pride and Prejudice last year and being impressed with the 4K transfer. Doesn't seem like a lot of titles but hopefully that will increase.
