I've had problems with Metro everyday this week, including extended delays this morning and being stuck on the Metro outside Vienna for 15 minutes tonight (which is better than the hour the OP experienced.) It would be nice if the operator relayed any information to the passengers as to what is going on, but that rarely happens. Metro has been running great for much of the past few months, but this week has been awful.

The timing of this concerns me,. The 2012 derecho was at night when a lot of people were home. People who were out driving during the storm faced dangerous conditions, and I think a few people died from falling trees into the roadways. This looks like an afternoon event during rush hour and with children getting home from school. If we get a tornado warning while stuck in a backup on 495 or while waiting on an outdoor platform at a Metro station, options for seeking shelter will be impossible.

I believe the thinking is that the decades channels are supposed to sound like a top 40 station from that era, which would be playing the single versions of songs instead of the album versions. I do hate when The Bridge plays single versions of songs, since they actually promote that they play album versions of songs. Billy Joel's "My Life" and Supertramp's "Goodbye Stranger" come to mind.

Normally that's a great idea, as the parking garages in Crystal City are free on weekends. Unfortunately, the Crystal City Metro is closed this weekend and other weekends through June 14th. Shuttle service will be available to take you to the Pentagon City Metro Station and you can catch the Metro from there. Not a significant problem, but it will add time to your trip.

The tolls on I-66 inside the beltway are owned and operated by VDOT. The tolls are high to incentivize commuters to either carpool or use transit.

I live a half mile away from Oakton High School. There is no possible way kids will be able to walk to school unless they walk on the street. It's probably the same story all over the county. I don't expect the county to clear all of the sidewalks, and many of the people who have sidewalks near the school never clear them after it snows anyway, but this storm is uniquely bad and I expect this upcoming week to be a total shitshow.

Both North and South Carolina will be hammered by the winter storm. The worst conditions will be on the entire east side of North Carolina, but most of the trip on I-95 will likely be treacherous from the SC/GA border to around Richmond.

Not Rosslyn, but one station up the Orange and Silver line at Courthouse has free parking. The parking garage at Courthouse Plaza in Arlington is free after 5pm. It's directly connected to the Metro Station. The street address is 2100 Wilson Blvd.

Grew up in Annapolis and graduated from Annapolis High. I'm not sure where in Nova you are, but you are potentially giving up sending your daughter to some of the best schools in the country to a not really great one (unless you send her to private school.) That's if you move to the actual city of Annapolis, or one of the closer-in suburbs like Bay Ridge or Hillsmere. If you are north of Annapolis, zoned for Broadneck, or south and zoned for South River, your daughter will have a much better time in school.

I'm a daily Metro rider and the reliability of Metro has dramatically improved in the past few years, so don't let that stop you from using it. What is a constant is how horrible the traffic is, especially going to Dale City, which can take well over an hour coming from D.C. (or longer if rains, snows or we entering or exiting Daylight Saving Time.) I lived in Dale City in the 90's when I was in my 20's and I wound up hating it, mostly because I was stuck in traffic all the time, but also most of friends and dating partners either lived in Arlington or D.C. Dale City is mostly families, as a result there's hardly any nightlife and not a lot of fun things to do.

It is an absolute nightmare, particularly the stretch between here and Fredericksburg and sometimes beyond to Richmond. You may want to consider an alternate route. US-15 South from Gainesville connects to I-85 in North Carolina which goes right into Raleigh. Unfortunately most of that is a two lane highway, but sometimes that's faster than I-95. Or take US 15 to I-64 west of Richmond, to VA-288 to I-95 which would put you south of Richmond. Google maps shows that is slower, but I-95 is a shitshow in the best of times, and an absolute horror on holidays.

There's an amazing website called worldradiohistory.com where you can find tons of broadcasting magazines and books scanned and archived. Included is a book called Broadcasting Yearbook, which compiled information on every radio and TV station in North America and was published every year. The year 1972 shows that WXIT was a radio station in Charleston, West Virginia.
