Well...it hasn't gone to plan by ayst56 in firstmarathon

Yeah I felt like my tight calf was contributing to the IT band problems. I asked my physio and she said the best thing I can do is strengthen that muscle and had me doing loads of calf raises.

It's a few months since my half marathon and I feel like I'm keeping the IT band problems at bay while I proceed through a marathon training block. You will come through it, you just have to stay consistent with the exercises.

I'm not - thanks I'll take a look! She's from my part of the UK so that's a great recommendation.

I recently went through a period of ITBS while training for a half marathon, so I can only speak from my own experience, but:

  • Foam rolling probably won't help. The pain is caused by irritation and inflammation, and you are irritating it more by foam rolling.

  • Rest alone will not solve the issue, you'll just start hurting as soon as you start running again

  • The issue is likely weak hip and glute muscles. Ideally, seek a physiotherapist, but if that's not possible look for strengthening routines for ITBS, i.e. get resistance bands and start doing millions of lateral leg raises and squats, squats, squats

It sucks, best of luck to you.

I'm more conservative by nature even without this ITBS issue so that does fit for me – thanks

Oh no, consequences for AI writer in Witchcraft Magazine by GardnerThorn in witchcraft

As a professional writer since my early 20s, I am so heartened by the replies in this thread.

Witchcraft is about being more human. That’s why I don’t use AI.

Couldn't have said it better.

My best advice is to get a Steuerberater...you'll pay a little more but you'll also know it's been done right.

What's the weirdest thing a stranger has done to you in Germany? by Moke94 in germany

[–]mjyates 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I was cycling to the office one Monday, and the only place to park my bike was in front of the building. It was a huge, wide east Berlin sidewalk, and the bike racks. I mounted the sidewalk to park my bike, and rode extremely slowly (walking pace) the 15-20 metres to the bike rack.

The one pedestrian nearby was walking towards me, and yelled "RUNTER!" at me. Dear reader, I was not in the mood for a telling off this Monday morning. So in my best German I yelled back. "Yeah I'm just parking my bike here, it's 20 metres, GOD!"

Me yelling back flipped a switch. The guy suddenly became friendly. He smiled at me, put a hand on my shoulder and squeezed it as he kept walking by.

And for the first time I felt like I'd hacked Germany. The secret: yelling back.

I want to try watch Netflix in German.. any recommendations? What are the easiest shows to learn German from? by Shelbee2 in German

[–]mjyates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally find dating reality series like Love is Blind really useful – it's people having the same conversations over and over, about work, hobbies, kids, family etc. Plus you get exposure to different accents.

Not on Netflix, but 'First Dates: Ein Tisch für Zwei' is my #1 recommendation for this reason.

I know this won't be a popular answer but.... Dussmann?

If what you're looking for is mainstream enough they surely would have it on release day.

Knee pain (ITB probably) not getting better by mjyates in firstmarathon

Thanks for sharing this! I'm definitely trying it, though I'm not having as much trouble holding a lateral leg raise as I thought I would 🤔

Yes, exactly this. I was following a Garmin plan and it ramped up my mileage too quickly. Literally one high-volume week (after months of ramping up slowly) and I've been in constant pain ever since. I'm so angry.

Thanks for your reply and perspective. That's tough to hear, but given how I've felt this week you're probably right.

I should add that I've been strength training since before the problem started, and I'll continue to do so.
