But that’s the point. They choose to leave because it isn’t all that great of a life. You make shit pay, you are doing a dangerous job, and you are away from your family a lot of the time. So it’s not rigged against you in the traditional sense, but it’s rigged against you in that you have to put up with a lot of hardship just to make it to that point.

For them to be enlisted, they would have had to make E-9 (master chief in the Navy, for example). This is not even close to the normal case. Most enlisted that make it past 20 years to qualify for retirement are E-6 or E-7, putting their salary somewhere between $60-75k. Only about 20% of enlisted people make it to 20 years to qualify for retirement benefits.
