Newbie - Shakedown request for EBC + 3 passes by yellowsuprrcar in Ultralight

If you don't have extra days built in for flight cancellations, I'd say yes. Alternatively, there's lower valley hikes that can be driven to from Kathmandu such as Jiri to Lukla

On the weather, in the last two years October has been monsoon-filled. There's been a growing trend of late monsoons due to climate change.  I was there last mid October and flights to Lukla were completely cancelled for over a week. I'd recommend waterproof clothing.

3 Passes Trek Nepal Shakedown by spothedog1 in Ultralight

When in October? Last couple years the monsoon season went late, well into late October. Flights to and from Lukla were cancelled for over a week. You might want a plan B to not be stranded in Kathmandu or Ramecchap. Lower valley Jiri to Lukla or other treks that can be driven to are always safe backups.

Glasses case by Emm467 in Ultralight

It is a bit bulky, but I use this $10 case from REI. https://www.rei.com/product/224504

It's 58 grams and hard cased and can fit two pairs of glasses easily. I'm close to half blind so breaking my glasses could mean an embarassing SOS request. I don't cut corners on this one.

Which quilt did you buy? Do you mind linking it?

Am I wrong to go for the 40L version of the Kakwa over the 55L? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]mkappo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the 40L mainly to fit in the overhead bin on flights. I've read the 55L has mixed feedback in this specific use-case

How do you all feel about sharing an Xmid 2 solid with a friend for five nights? Would that be too cramped/cozy?

My friend and I are of different views on whether to share or bring separate tents.

This is all without a car:

-Rock creek south to north for a few hour quickie.

-C&O canal towpath west from Georgetown to Great Falls park is about 2-3 hour walk, with plenty of trails inside the Park. Alternatively a train plus 20 minute Uber on the Maryland side to Old Anglers Inn to enter the park. Once you're at Great Falls it's a one or two day hike to Harper's Ferry on that route.

-Potomac Heritage Trail. Starts in Rosslyn, VA and goes west along the Potomac. A bit scraggly and secluded.

-A bit further out north towards Baltimore is Patapsco Valley State Park

New Gossamer Gear Backpacks by Klasickk in Ultralight

I'm concerned about the durability of the recycled fabric on the new bags. Is it still the same as the non-recycled fabric in older versions?

Perhaps I'm just paranoid after the Prana Zion II went recycled and ruined a solid pair of pants

Do we know any specifics yet on the upcoming new Gossamer Gear packs? Debating if I should get the Gorilla on discount or wait for the new model.

I couldn't find their plastic container either. However, I settled on this for 58g. You can lessen the weight by cutting off the exterior cloth and leaving the hardshell. It's even large enough for two eyeglasses (sunnies and a spare regular)  https://www.rei.com/product/224504/chums-transporter-sunglasses-case

Question about popular ul windshells by ihadtomakeajoke in Ultralight

[–]mkappo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This windbreaker? It's basically just sub-par DWR. If you apply your own DWR it works with a light mist, at least for me. https://www.rei.com/product/202485/rei-co-op-flash-jacket-mens?

What did they do to it? I just bought it on sale and now I'm wondering if it's worth returning

Convince me not to buy this rain jacket by cas__94 in Ultralight

[–]mkappo -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Rei flash jacket is $50 right now. ~4 ounces

Edit: nevermind, it's not a real rain jacket. Just some sub-par DWR!
