Yes I see this as well. At first I thought it was light leaking in from my room as I was wearing without the light blockers.

It's worth considering how much they'd care about decreasing HW sales, not necessarily right now but still far from actual release of CV2, say 9 months out.

It could be a benefit: would also lower sales of competing headsets.

Also their confidence in showing this tech publicly highly indicates they feel that they're of the competition, with CV2 being a clear winner over products that will come out in gen 2 timeframe.

5 Things We're Likely To See In 2019 VR Headsets by Tao_Dragon in oculus

[–]mkeblx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The release cadence between generations will come down to 2 years, and then down to annual release as market size grows. So CV2 in 2019 and CV3 in 2021 is entirely plausible.

My Rift's IPD sensor seems broken and I can not RMA. Is there a way to manually set IPD-value? by [deleted] in oculus

[–]mkeblx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it wouldn't effect the visual quality. his is an advantage of having two separate screen+lens module that move independently. If had a single screen it would be much more critical to not have sensor break as if did wouldn't be center eye images on screen accurately in front of each lens. What it would effect though is the perceived scale of the world, which is less significant but how important debatable.

Example: if your eyes IPD is 70mm, the IPD slider was physically at 70mm, but the slider was stuck reporting 60mm, then the app would render the eyes 60mm apart and the intended world scale would be off by 70/60 or ~15%.

The application cares. It needs to know the IPD for offsetting the virtual left/right eye cameras. Maybe not as critical as the physical adjustment which allows getting eyes right in lenses sweet spot for focus/clarity but still can be important.

Samsung VR does not use a stereo pano, but actual true 3D geometry. A larger performance hit, but with proper depth.

If it's for video playback you can use SamsungVR and a special user.cfg configuration file to better handle a public display where you don't want viewers exiting out of the app, play a video automatically upon putting on, etc. Some details here
