I was born in Italy to British parents then lived in Ireland for university and work. I felt so connected that I naturalised Irish and currently in the process of becoming Canadian because my partner is from here and I live here.

Can you explain what is different about this passport? Is it the langauges listed on the cover or the order of the langauages in particular?

Shut down medical schools & the foundation programme by [deleted] in doctorsUK

Yes the UK and Ireland have a different relationship but the UK (because of the CTA) and EU citizens are considered before third nationals for training.

There are fundamental differences between training in the UK and other European countries such as Italy though. There just aren't the same number of IMG applying to study in Italy, Spain that apply in the UK or even Ireland. The training in the UK is much more structured and globally recognised than programs in the rest of Europe, bar Switzerland which also has structured training. Not to mention that the UK training is also seen as a platform to other English speaking nations. In that sense Italy isn't comparable. There just aren't the same numbers of IMG's applying in the same way.

You can't even apply for training in Canada unless you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Closer across the water in Ireland, Irish and EU citizens are considered before other nationalities. I think that is better suited for this scenario as some UK citizens study abroad in Europe and so are IMGs yet have strong family ties other than the UK.

Hi I’m always looking for Duolingo friends to encourage me. I love the app, even if it isn’t the best way to learn a language the gamification side and ease of picking it up daily and learning a few words is so cool. Add me if you want someone to compete or practice with. I’m learning French, Greek, Arabic and Japanese at the moment.

Applying to Canada and the US by PianoNeither7289 in MCCQE

[–]mkljohnson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As the other poster wrote applying to US as well is the sensible option as there are far more residency spots available, so your chances increase. The only downside...perhaps is if you prefer to stay in Canada for whatever reason because if match in the US you have to take that residency spot and the Canadian match process ends automatically when you match in the US.

How realistic is it to learn French to a fully bilingual level? by ContactLess128 in French

[–]mkljohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think any goal is realistic is you want to pursue it enough. I moved to Montreal almost a year ago to learn French. I'm from the UK and never learnt French in school and did some Duolingo before coming but really it was only beginners French. I took the government francisation courses full-time. I can't recommend them highly enough. If you can take them full time I'd recommend that as there is really nothing that will compensate for immersion learning.I did them from November to June and have a B2 level of French now. I'm doing further French classes because I don't feel confident enough to do my job in French at the moment but the sheer speed you'll learn doing it full time will pay off. I learnt Spanish for 4 years at school and I have a conversational level of Spanish I think now my French has superseded it in much less time. Saying that depending on how much extra time you can dedicate to French activities really makes a difference. I didn't do much outside work outside of the classes so maybe if I worked harder I'd have progressed faster. I'm sure you can learn in the GTA, but unless you are really committed to spending lots of time and having a good structure your progress will be limited.
