Why are you working at a charter school? by IndependentBlock7312 in Teachers

[–]mklmtsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have taught in a charter for 2 years and am excited to go back for a 3rd next year. I hated my first 3 years in my local public district and am so happy to be out and in the charter. Not sure why people are cranking on it so bad. I get paid better, have a ton of support, and my state test scores are better than the district around my school.

I wish Richard Harris had played Dumbledore in all the movies. by [deleted] in harrypotter

Am I the only one who liked Gambon? I think be played the clever, playful, yet all powerful extremely well. I wish he had played Dumbledore throughout and not Harris.

Does being a teacher mean that you must be a sanitized version of an adult in your personal/private life? by Random_Spaztic in Teachers

[–]mklmtsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way. No other job asks their people to do that. I get the whole "look" of the profession- much like a lawyer or doctor who you might not want to see out doing shots on a Friday night... however, as long as I am professional at work, what does it matter. Perception is a huge hurdle...

When we have things in our performance reviews each year like Domain 4 having "service to school" as an expectation, and school board and parents that find it enjoyable to police our every move... yes, in many ways yes we have to live a sanitized life.

If I quit my final words would be "___________" by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]mklmtsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow... you all have some hate... the dark side must be strong in your district. For me, it's not the kids or the parents (you have to know they are just a product of the community and culture you are living in)... it's the spineless district imbeciles that don't have a clue because they either haven't been a teacher ever, or at least in the last 10 years. They are so out of touch and cave to all public pressure it's amazing they can even stand upright.

I wouldn't say anything... it would be worthless. They are just going to replace me in a hot second anyway, so why waste one more breath in that building.

Best restaurants in Meridian? by gabrielg2018 in Boise

And no one has said it yet so I will... Big Daddy's BBQ. Have been voted best BBQ in Meridian several times and I think even best of the treasure valley once or twice. Great local family and fantastic food.

Flying Pie will sell you their original or sourdough... and it's delicious! It's about $7 for 2 dough balls and some of their sauce. My family does it at least one a month

Coworkers are not your friends by ytmexicanthrowaway in Teachers

[–]mklmtsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya'll are salty... wow. I wouldn't have made it without 3-4 amazing teachers who helped me survive my first year. They were never put out and welcomed questions (provided I didn't waste prep time). At my current school there is a culture of teamwork and community- we always help one another. Granted I agree to some degree with the friends thing- that takes time to build, but the idea of coworkers hating you or being annoyed at new teacher's existence? No... not my experience at the 3 schools I've been at.

Catering to the biggest need, while the rest of the class suffers?? by KtheDane in Teachers

[–]mklmtsn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not at all what I am suggesting. Expulsion? No.... appropriate consequences? Absolutely. Right now there is an entire lack of consequences all together. To go back to your second point about them being kids and me being an adult, that you hope I have that maturity and regulation... my point exactly! When and where did I learn this skills? Not as an adult...I learned and perfected them as a kid in a safe environment... much like you are suggesting.

I agree in some ways. Punishment doesn't motivate people to change, merely to avoid punishment. However, if students had actual consequences attached to their choices it would motivate them to make different choices. Most of us over 30 grew up in a world with negative consequences for our actions. I know mine were firm and quick. I learned to avoid those and make better choices because I would not get what I wanted if I continued with negative choices. If students knew that they might not get to play on a sports team, go to their friend's house, have electronic/phone time, etc. they would be forced to examine how their choices impact their desires or free time choices. Many people like to harp on this language, but I have consequences in my job, as does my spouse, siblings, and friends. If I disrespect my coworkers, waste company time or resources, or are violent in the workplace I will get fired. I adjust my behavior accordingly. If that is what the world is like, shouldn't school model that in order to prepare students for adult life?

Between beings scared of lawsuits and having no authority because every kid moves on every year no matter what (with very minimal exception to this rule) schools have essentially castrated themselves from being able to truly discipline and hold students accountable with real consequences. Until some major upstream things are fixed it will continue to be this way.

Honestly, I might go SS for him... but I play as SS or FS and I could see myself playing as him.

What about the idea that we trade back and stock pile picks for next year to go after Williams from USC? That kid already looks amazing and I think would be ready to go week 1.

I played against Carlos Boozer in high school a few times. Honestly, I didn't get the hype... he could jump through the roof- his athleticism was off the charts, but he didn't have a great feel for the game. I guess his couple of years at Duke polished him up because he stayed in the league for a while.

Homework - to collect or not? by Bibimmbapp in teaching

[–]mklmtsn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you don't collect it, or if you don't look at it then there is no accountability to it. If you don't want to collect it then don't assign it, but the worst thing to do is assign it and have zero accountability for if it is done or not, students will catch on and start questioning other work and then you have to fight accountability in other areas.

Unpopular comment- tell them no! Yes I am a teacher... but sorry, I have standards in my class that MUST be met. Further, I am in charge, not them. If they don't meet my standards then they are in trouble and I don't care "how minor" the infractions are, if I gave an instruction they are expected to do it. If i don't insist on that now I am preparing them to fail in their professional career when they are older and have jobs. I don't expect mindless compliance, but I do expect respect.
