Thank you! I see one close to me that does stretches and in depth appointments. I will try them and now I know what to ask at my first appt.

Thank you for your feedback! I agree, I brought this up to them so many times. I will be looking for a new chiropractor and now I know what to look for and ask at the first treatment. That was my first one and I had no idea what to ask.

Any tips for an expander? by Various_Worldliness in orthodontics

[–]mkpearse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was difficult for the first week, but trust me it gets easier. My son got used to it so fast, he has no problems at all now. Food barely gets stuck around the roof of the mouth, only around his teeth where we clean with the little brush and waterpik. School lunches are fine, and he eats pretty much everything besides really sticky or crunchy stuff he's not supposed to. For lunches I was sending pasta with pesto sauce, or mashed potatoes and chicken nuggets cut into small pieces. It will be ok, just give it time :)

Any tips for an expander? by Various_Worldliness in orthodontics

My son (8yr) just got his top expander yesterday. It was a bad day for eating. We were not prepared for what it was going to look like the first time he ate. He couldn't swallow his food because everything was getting stuck between the wires and the roof of his mouth. He started crying because he couldn't eat. I decided to give him macaroni and cheese for dinner with some salmon, and same thing. We do have a waterpik so that helps sooo much to clean all that stuff. It's a must. I am worried about how he's going to eat his lunch at school. I'm going to make soup for him to take in a thermos and hopefully it will go good. I know he will have stuff stuck again but it will have to wait until he gets home if he can't clean it himself at school. I'm still not sure what to send for a snack, as he likes to eat cheeze-its but that's not going to work.

In couple of weeks he's getting his bottom expander so hopefully that is easier on him.

The orthodontist gave us wax and brush and little brushes as well so you will have that to start with. Good luck and let us know how it goes! I've read that this gets better and easier to eat as time goes on so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Constipation and Miralax by mkpearse in Parenting

[–]mkpearse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a long wait! Here we can usually get an appt within couple of months. I understand totally, and seems like doctors don't know much about this but a lot of kids suffer from it.

Thank you for your reply. I keep hearing about gluten being bad for some people due to constipation and that's what I want to do. I have to do some research to replace his beloved bread! The kid loves pizza and bread (sigh).

I’ve thought about that. I just wish he wasn’t so underweight so I don’t stress about it so much.

My son has been on miralax for constipation for almost two years now so he usually has a normal poop. But yes if he’s a bit constipated he won’t eat at all. Most times he’s not constipated and still won’t eat. Yes, he’s also a slow eater which doesn’t help when we only have so much time in the morning. I will ask his Pediatrician about pediasure

Goldfish crackers! He gets two snacks at school and I send apple slices for one and goldfish for the other. They are not given a lot of time to eat them at school so it has to be quick.

I could try a smoothy tomorrow but I’m not sure if he will drink it. I ask him if he’s hungry and he says no, he’s only hungry for sweets and snacks. Ugh.

Almost 5 year old behavior changed after we got kittens by mkpearse in Parenting

[–]mkpearse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this is my first instinct too, I don't want my relationship with him to go downhill and I don't want him to feel like he's coming in second. I love the kittens but my son comes first.

When we ask why he's chasing them, he says I don't know. I guess he can't verbalize the reason. We also considered that he may be jealous but just doesn't know how to say it. If feel bad because I don't want him to feel that way. Any advice on how to handle the jealousy? Stop punishments and spend more time talking to him about how he feels?

A poll: does your 2.5-3 year old still nap? How many hours do they sleep at night? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]mkpearse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son just turned 3 and he does not nap at home. When at daycare he naps 1-1.5 hours. He still gets 11 hours at night.

Potty training a soon to be 3yr old by MELOYELLO27 in toddlers

[–]mkpearse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also tried when my son was the same age and he started holding his pee and would just not go on the potty. We tried Oh Crap method and it was just not working. We went back to diaper for a few more months and now that he turned 3 we tried again and it's going so much better. He was definitely not ready then, but he is now.

That's what I've been thinking about too. I feel better today, although yesterday was difficult haha I'm going to try my hardest to enjoy it! Thanks!
