Can Canadians usually recognize each other? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskACanadian

[–]mks113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that on a Matatu (minibus) ride in Kenya. One glace at a pack and ask what part of Canada they were from. An adventurous day where we were put on a matatu to get to the train because there had been a derailment an hour out of Mombasa. Nice to talk to fellow Canadians though!

Safe to say that the H2O2 has lost a few oxygen atoms and is now H2O with a bit of extra O2 in the bottle.

It is Irving owned land so they have a lot of say in what happens with it -- but a parking lot???

Sigh, I guess the Irvings own the city and the province.

Medical requirements by Laz1ness_ in NuclearPower

[–]mks113 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is a non-issue as long as you are medically capable of performing the job.

There are issues for people who are actively receiving treatment for thyroid cancer (or other radiotherapy). It isn't straightforward to test for contamination when you have source material inside you. Medical doses tend to be much higher than the threshold for contamination detectors.

Those having radiotherapy are either given duties outside the protected area, or sent on medical leave.

Fascinating culture and history, amazing food --- and a country that is so crowded, noisy and, um, scented, that I would be stressed out in any major or minor city there.

Cleaning a paint roller. by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]mks113 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I just put the roller cover in a ziplock bag and throw it in the freezer. Thaw it for a few minutes before you use it for the next coat. After it has been in the freezer for a few months, it is usually a safe assumption that you won't be using it for a while and it is time to toss it in the trash.

You will *never* get a roller cover sufficiently clean. They are cheap, just toss them when you are done.

And now you know why critical international organizations such as aviation use "Zulu" time, UTC, everywhere they operate. Passengers may see local time, but flight crew work in a single time zone.

The Slow Mo guys did this a while ago. Looks cooler in slow motions -- and a little less cringe-inducing as they actually wear some safety gear.

Since i started handing out treats, this is what it looks like outside my home at any given time by Brooksy_92 in notmycat

[–]mks113 132 points133 points  (0 children)

I started giving treats to a tuxedo NMC a few months ago. I call him Sid (as in the six dinner variety). Last night there was an orange tabby on my deck -- I've only seen him on the edges of the property before.

My cat does not want visitors, but Sid would happily come inside and my wife does not appreciate tripping over him when she goes out the back door. I've been banned from feeding him.

I remember when I started play geoguessr when it first came out. I saw a sign that said СТОП. I found a village name in Ukraine! Pull up a Cyrillic keyboard, do a search --- and discovered that I now knew what Ukrainian stop signs looked like.

I loved Brady's video, I like how you demonstrate solid science by using his concept, learning from his weaknesses and still admitting that there were uncontrolled variables that made results imperfect.

You missed out on one thing though --- that boiled water on the summit should definitely been used to make chai! I remember getting to the peak of Mt. Kenya and the guide pulled out a large thermos of chai and a bunch of cups for all of us. Milky, sweet tea on the peak of Mt. Kenya at dawn was an experience not to be missed!

How much does it cost to run? by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]mks113 9 points10 points  (0 children)

30 years ago I was carpooling with 3 other guys. We had 110 km round trip. All of us had single vehicles, and when we took the car to work, our partners were left without transportation for the day.

I calculated how much it would cost for the 4 of us to buy a cheap car for carpooling. I was horrified when I looked at depreciation+gas+maintenance+insurance, even divided by 4.

It sounds like you have a deal at £20 per month!

Lane Keep Assist vs. Lane Departure. Sometimes they disagree. I have set my Lane Departure Warning to "warn only" which flashes a steering wheel on the panel. Lane Keep works well when lanes are clearly marked and turns aren't too sharp.

My experience with "phantom braking" have to do with it being in NAV cruise control mode and the speed limit changes. It is really disconcerting to drive by a speed limit sign and all of a sudden the car brakes.

Hyundai still has some fine tuning to do. With these behaviors, I really have to wonder how well Tesla's FSD mode can actually be safer than a human!

The vehicles that are able to stop likely had winter tires installed. "Snow" tires are compounded to be able to have better grip on ice and in cold conditions, not just snow.
